High economic efficiency
After more than 5 years of Hanoi implementing Japonica rice production, the program has shown high economic efficiency, exceeding the set target.
According to information from the Hanoi Agricultural Development Center, in 2022, the unit has deployed the construction of 16 Japonica rice and high-quality rice production areas, along with 3 rice-fish production conversion models in 19 communes in 8 districts in the city (with a total area of 1,117 hectares, Spring crop 704.5 hectares, Summer crop 412.5 hectares).
Of which, 60 hectares are for organic rice production, 5 hectares for herbal rice, 12 hectares for rice - fish, 300 hectares for rice production according to VietGAP standards, 740 hectares for safe rice production. The economic efficiency of Japonica rice and high-quality rice production is higher than that of Khang Dan 18 rice from 10.3 - 15 million VND/ha/crop.
Notably, the city's Japonica rice area has increased 2.55 times compared to 2018 (3,651 hectares in 2018, more than 10,000 hectares in 2022). The results of developing Japonica rice production in particular and high-quality rice according to export standards in general have contributed to bringing the structure of high-quality rice varieties in Hanoi to over 60% in 2022.
In Ung Hoa district, there are 8,350 hectares of rice cultivation, of which more than 5,660 hectares are planted with high-quality rice varieties, such as: Golden sticky rice, fragrant rice, and Japanese rice variety J02. With the aim of increasing the value of rice products, the district has built the brand "Khu Chay Quality Rice".

Ms. Cao Thi Thuy, Director of Doan Ket Agricultural Production and Business Cooperative, Phuong Tu Commune, Ung Hoa District, shared that with the goal of exporting, the Cooperative has long applied high technology from the introduction of quality JO2 rice varieties to the application of synchronous mechanization from land preparation, care and harvesting. With an area of over 310 hectares, the Cooperative is currently also linking to purchase JO2 rice products for farmers in Ung Hoa and neighboring districts and building the Khu Chay Rice brand.
According to Ms. Trinh Thi Nguyet, Director of Dong Phu Organic Agricultural Cooperative, Chuong My District, the city has planned to develop a high-quality rice production area. Along with encouraging farmers to develop safe production, Chuong My District has expanded the production of organic rice of Japanese Jamonica variety in Dong Phu Commune with an area of 47 hectares.
“Environmentally friendly production, delicious rice quality certified by the US and Japan, so the value of Dong Phu organic rice is much higher than rice grown using traditional methods. The entire organic rice area of Dong Phu is signed to purchase all products with stable prices to help farmers within 5 years,” Ms. Trinh Thi Nguyet shared.
Hanoi rice reaches Americans, Japanese, Australians
Currently, in Hanoi city, there are more than 200 concentrated rice production areas, with a total area of about 40,000 hectares; each area has an area of 50 hectares or more, some areas are up to more than 300 hectares.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ta Van Tuong said that through the implementation of the high-quality rice production program, some varieties have yielded 15% to 20% higher quality and economic efficiency than conventional rice varieties.
In particular, Japonica rice has been exported to a number of countries, such as the US, Japan, Australia... Promoting the production of high-quality rice that meets export standards not only brings high income to farmers, but also increases competitiveness in the market, meeting the trend of international integration...
According to Director of Hanoi Agricultural Development Center Hoang Thi Hoa, product consumption is the key step. Therefore, to develop sustainable production, right from the beginning of the season, the Center has connected businesses to sign product consumption contracts; at the same time, it has directed cooperatives to develop product consumption plans for farmers.
As a result, 5 enterprises have entered into consuming products for farmers, including: Vietnam High-Tech Agricultural Materials and Seeds Joint Stock Company, Bac Hai Industrial Investment and Development Company Limited, Long Vu Company, Khang Long Company, and My Loan Company.

In addition to production development, the Center pays special attention to building a production and consumption chain to increase the value and affirm the brand of high-quality rice of Hanoi. Accordingly, in 2022, the Center successfully built the product chain "Nam Phuong Tien Japonica Organic Rice" for Nam Phuong Tien Organic Agricultural Cooperative (Chuong My district).
In the coming time, to enhance the Hanoi rice brand, in the period of 2021-2025, the structure of high-quality rice varieties in the whole city must reach over 80% of the cultivated area. Therefore, Hanoi strives to maintain and develop 200 areas growing Japonica rice and high-quality commercial rice in the direction of safety, VietGAP, organic, meeting export standards.
Along with promoting rice brand development, Hanoi will build and form 3 to 5 domestic and rice export chains.
Mr. Ta Van Tuong informed that the Hanoi Department of Agriculture continues to coordinate with localities to plan production areas, build large-scale model fields, support farmers in applying scientific and technical advances, and bring mechanization into the production of high-quality commercial rice.
“In addition, Hanoi will support investment in infrastructure systems and irrigation for large-scale commodity production areas in general and rice cultivation areas in particular; continue to support cooperatives and enterprises in building brands and trademarks, boosting trade promotion activities and product advertising in the market,” Mr. Tuong affirmed.
