Must make own decisions when choosing a career

Sharing with students attending the event "A day as a student at Hanoi Medical University" held today, April 19, Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong, a lecturer in psychology at Hanoi Medical University, said that there is scientific basis showing that people have more opportunities to succeed when choosing a career they love.

At the event, Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong expressed her sympathy with more than 600 students from many high schools about the difficulty of choosing a career at the age of 18.

This is the age when the frontal lobe of the human brain (responsible for thinking, judgment, planning, regulating emotions, and impulsive behavior) is not fully developed and is undergoing restructuring and expansion.

This restructuring process takes a long time to complete (women around 24 years old, men around 30 years old), which explains why teenagers often have strong emotions that overwhelm reason, and sometimes have incomprehensible behaviors. The teenage brain offers outstanding advantages in learning thanks to its flexibility, but it also contains vulnerable elements.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong, the first factor influencing each student’s career choice is family. Then comes friends, then the social environment… But according to psychological science, 12th graders have a deeper maturity in self-awareness. For example, they can know their strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to respect and love themselves.

This strengthens and builds students' confidence, self-esteem, ability to make decisions and take full responsibility for those decisions. This is a "transformation" step, helping students achieve maturity in problem-solving skills in higher education.

"We should note that we should not choose a career based on trends or on the subjective opinions of others. We can consult others, but we need to especially respect our own decisions and take responsibility for our decisions," Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong advised.

Don't limit your choices.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong, the path to success is a choice that comes from the heart, from our love and sincerity towards ourselves and our loved ones. That will help us make the most useful and healthy contributions to ourselves, our families and society.

In the medical field, this factor is extremely important. "Students of Hanoi Medical University have a slogan: "Study well, dream a lot, love passionately". Love here is not about a romantic relationship but about desire, about ideals, about what gives us the inner motivation to overcome the extremely arduous learning journey", Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong explained.

Many people worry about whether they should choose "love" but their abilities may not meet the requirements of the major, the school, especially majors with high benchmarks such as medicine. However, psychology shows that internal motivation will help students progress more. Internal motivation is what makes people strive for values, for their own benefit, helps them know how to take responsibility, know how to persevere when facing challenges.

On the other hand, mindset theory suggests that besides fixed mindset, there is growth mindset. Growth mindset helps people believe that abilities and talents can develop over time, a person can learn new things if they make an effort, and believe that failure is part of the learning process.

Growth mindset encourages people to step out of their comfort zone, increase opportunities, and change themselves. It helps people dare to commit to the learning process as well as choosing a career. Although everyone needs to know their limits, it does not mean that they always put themselves in a fixed mindset. When we see that our high school graduation test results are low, the upcoming real exam will be bad, this way of thinking reduces our motivation to study.

"Moreover, each person should open themselves up to many opportunities, continue to explore themselves to recognize reliable signs in choosing the right direction. There may be those who like the medical profession, but if they find their abilities are not suitable, they can consider other careers right in medical school.

For example, Hanoi Medical University is aiming for multidisciplinary training (in 2024, the school will enroll 17 majors), so students have many opportunities that match their abilities. With a growth mindset, we will have the opportunity to develop ourselves better and better when placed in a healthy and positive environment," Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong shared.
