Dredging Ba Ngoi channel for ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT to navigate

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông27/11/2024

The project to dredge and maintain Ba Ngoi waterway to accommodate ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT for safe navigation is being actively implemented.

According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the dredging and maintenance project of Ba Ngoi waterway has been included in the 2024 maritime works maintenance plan by the Ministry of Transport .

Ba Ngoi Channel will be dredged to the design standard - 10.5m with an estimated volume of about 400,000 m3. The project will be implemented in 2 years 2024 - 2025. In 2024, procedures and preparations will be carried out to conduct dredging in 2025.

Informing Giao thong Newspaper, a representative of Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority said that the project has now been approved by the local authorities for the location of the dredged material dumping site. This unit is coordinating with relevant agencies to speed up the implementation of the next environmental procedures.

The Ba Ngoi waterway has not been dredged or maintained since 2008. Currently, the Ba Ngoi waterway has a section from buoys "9" and "10" with a minimum depth of 7.6m, receiving ships up to 50,000 (DWT) at wharf number 2 of Ba Ngoi port.

In the Project to study and improve the ability to exploit public maritime infrastructure and existing maritime infrastructure, the Vietnam Maritime Administration assessed that the current public maritime infrastructure system at Nha Trang seaport is capable of handling larger ships than the existing ones.

However, during the process of maneuvering ships in and out of the port, Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority regularly recommends that pilots and captains pay attention to shallow points on the channel to ensure safe maneuvering.

Previously, at a working session with the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province in October 2024, Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration Le Do Muoi requested the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province to pay attention to supporting and unifying the establishment of a location for dumping dredged material in the Ba Ngoi waterway, creating favorable conditions for dredging the Ba Ngoi waterway such as relocating aquaculture cages of local people, avoiding affecting the dredging work and affecting the water environment after dredging...

It is known that recently, in Cam Ranh Bay, people have been spontaneously releasing cages, rafts, and buoys for aquaculture, encroaching on the Ba Ngoi public waterway, anchorage areas, branch waterways, and turning areas for boats in front of the wharf at some seaports with high density.

According to statistics from Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority, the number of cages encroaching on shipping lanes and anchorage areas in Cam Ranh Bay is up to more than 40,000. The Port Authority has presided over and coordinated with local authorities and relevant agencies to organize many campaigns of propaganda, mobilization, inspection and handling at the scene. At the same time, it has drawn up records and requested violators to urgently remove cages from maritime works. Despite increased coordination in handling, the above situation still exists and cannot be completely handled.
