Reuters reported that on August 19, the White House officially launched a TikTok account, taking advantage of this short video platform to reach more than 170 million US users to convey President Donald Trump's message.
The move comes amid a special context where President Trump himself has expressed his sympathy for the app, crediting TikTok for helping him attract support from young voters in his victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election.
Currently, Mr. Trump's @realdonaldtrump campaign account on TikTok has more than 15 million followers.
The new account @whitehouse was activated on the evening of August 19 (US time) with the first video being a speech by President Trump declaring "I am your voice," with the caption "America, we are back! Hello TikTok!".
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes that President Trump has delivered for the American people to as many audiences and platforms as possible."
However, this move has raised concerns from Washington lawmakers about the possibility that US user data could fall into the hands of the Chinese government .
Previous intelligence assessments have shown that the app's owner is under the influence of the Chinese government and could be used to influence Americans.
A law passed in 2024 requires TikTok to cease operations by January 19 of this year unless ByteDance completes the divestment of the app's US assets or demonstrates significant progress toward a sale.
However, after starting his second presidential term on January 20, Mr. Trump has repeatedly extended this deadline, from early April to June 19, and most recently to September 17.
The extension has drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who say the Trump administration is ignoring the law and national security concerns related to China's control of TikTok./.
