Discussions included sharing the AI development vision of ASEAN and the US, necessary platforms and specific proposals to build AI capacity and infrastructure for the ASEAN region.
The Forum was attended by more than 100 delegates, representing the US government and Congress such as Congressman Jay Obernolte, Co-Chair of the US House of Representatives' AI Working Group, Assistant Secretary of State for Digital Technology Russ Headlee, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Digital Services William Guidera, Ambassadors, Charge d'Affaires of ASEAN countries, academics and leaders of leading US technology businesses.
Speaking at the opening of the Forum, Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized that in the context of the ASEAN-US relationship being upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, cooperation in technology and innovation is the focus and important driving force to promote and deepen the ASEAN-US relationship.
While the US is the world leader in AI, the ASEAN region has talented human resources and favorable mechanisms to become a place to converge and deploy ideas, an opportunity for the two sides to strengthen cooperation on the basis of linking with ASEAN's interests and common values.
Delegates said that the US and ASEAN are both determined and eager to develop AI sustainably and responsibly, thereby building a smart, safe and inclusive society.
The US Congress and Government leaders recognized ASEAN countries as important partners in promoting new areas of cooperation, saying they are ready to work together to build institutions and encourage US businesses to seek out leading regional markets such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to increase investment.
Regarding orientation, delegates agreed that ASEAN-US cooperation in the field of AI needs to be promoted in the spirit of jointly developing an open, safe and sustainable ecosystem; in which government agencies, parliaments, businesses and research institutes play a complementary role in policy formulation, human resource training and digital infrastructure building in ASEAN.
Representatives of Google, Equinix, the US Chamber of Commerce and Temasek Investment Fund said that ASEAN is currently an important market but the potential for development and cooperation with the US is still very large.
US businesses recommend that ASEAN countries continue to improve and enhance their energy supply capacity, high-quality human resources, and perfect regulations to promote the development of AI and cooperation between US and ASEAN businesses.
The forum put forward a number of specific ideas and proposals for ASEAN-US cooperation in the field of AI, which will serve as a basis for the two sides to continue discussions at upcoming events, such as the ASEAN Digital Ministerial Meeting scheduled to be held in Vietnam in January 2026./.
