Outage tracking website Downdetector.com recorded more than 100,000 cases of users reporting Instagram outages in the US, 24,000 in Canada and 56,000 in the UK. At its peak, more than 180,000 users were affected.
The social networking company admitted to experiencing technical problems, but did not disclose details of the number of users affected.
“Earlier this morning, a technical issue caused some users to have difficulty accessing Instagram. We worked to resolve the issue as quickly as possible for affected users,” said a representative of Meta, Instagram’s parent company.
The outage began around midnight on May 21 and was gradually resolved a few hours later. This is the second time the platform has been disrupted in the past two months.
The keyword #instagramdown became a trending topic on Twitter, Meta's rival social network.
