Neymar is enjoying his time in Brazil. |
On May 29, Neymar played in a friendly match between Santos and RB Leipzig in Brazil. When asked by Sky Germany if he knew who Wirtz was, Neymar replied “I don’t know” with a bewildered expression.
The Brazilian striker's reaction then caused controversy. Many fans thought Neymar was too arrogant for not knowing who Wirtz was.
"It's crazy that a famous player like Neymar doesn't know who will set the transfer record in European football this summer," commented a fan named Jonas.
However, when asked about Jamal Musiala, Wirtz's teammate in the German national team, Neymar commented: "Jamal is an excellent player, a key star of the team. I think he will become one of the best in the future."
Many fans then argued that because Neymar had never faced Wirtz at club level in recent years, the Brazilian striker might not know the Bayer Leverkusen star.
Meanwhile, Neymar faced Musiala when PSG faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League. So, it is understandable that Neymar does not know Wirtz.
However, Neymar's reaction also reminded many people of Diego Maradona's actions with midfielder Thomas Muller.
During a press conference before the friendly match between Germany and Argentina in March 2010 in Munich, Maradona refused to sit down for a joint press interview with Muller, thinking that the Bayern star was just a ball boy at the time.
Maradona even asked Muller to leave the press conference table before he would sit down for an interview. In response to this request, Muller had to leave. The story later became a famous anecdote in the football world , because three months later, at the 2010 World Cup, Muller scored to help Germany defeat Argentina 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
Sitting on the Argentina bench, Maradona would have known who Muller was. At the 2026 World Cup next summer, if Neymar is part of the Brazilian squad and has the chance to face Germany in the tournament, he would also know how talented Wirtz is.
