Speaking at the opening of the Conference, Mr. Bui Quang Hung - Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Agency said that Vietnam has deeply integrated into the world economy .
To date, Vietnam has participated in 17 free trade agreements (FTAs) with more than 60 countries and territories, covering about 60% of global GDP. At the same time, it has established comprehensive and strategic partnerships with many countries, including Japan.

Mr. Bui Quang Hung emphasized: Vietnam is actively promoting the process of growth model innovation and economic restructuring. The development orientation in the new period focuses on improving growth quality, focusing on efficiency and sustainability through the application of science , technology and innovation. The Vietnamese Government has been implementing many breakthrough policies to develop the economy based on modern technology, promote digital transformation and encourage innovation. These factors play a core role in improving national competitiveness, creating high added value and contributing significantly to GDP growth in the coming years.
According to Mr. Bui Quang Hung, Vietnam and Japan have maintained a comprehensive strategic partnership for many years. Japan is currently one of Vietnam's most important economic partners.
The two countries have had many activities to enhance economic exchanges, bringing great opportunities for businesses on both sides. Vietnam - Japan trade has grown steadily over the years. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, in 2024, the total import-export turnover between Vietnam and Japan reached 46.2 billion USD, and in the first quarter of 2025 it was about 12 billion USD, with the main export items being agricultural products (rice, coffee, cashew nuts, seafood), industrial products (textiles, footwear, wooden furniture), electronic components and machinery. Vietnam imports a lot of machinery, high-tech equipment, automobiles, spare parts, and production materials from Japan. The commodity structure of the two countries is complementary and not competitive. To date, Japan is in the top three in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam in 2024 and is a major partner in the fields of trade, tourism and development cooperation.
Mr. Kunihiko Hirabayashi, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Japan Center, assessed that Vietnam has long been one of the attractive investment destinations for Japanese enterprises, with a young and capable workforce, competitive production costs, strategic location and strong participation in new-generation free trade agreements.
Mr. Kunihiko Hirabayashi emphasized that even in times of global instability, Vietnam is still considered a strategic and reliable partner for Japan. Vietnam continues to maintain its prominent position in international trade due to its participation and continuous consolidation of global value chains.
The Secretary General of the ASEAN-Japan Center also suggested many promising areas of cooperation between Vietnam and Japan such as green and environmentally friendly products, joint activities to promote the national brands of the two countries to open up opportunities for co-operation in developing common brands in some product groups with resonance values between Vietnam's excellent production capacity and Japan's trust, and parallel activities to expand to emerging markets to develop supply chains.
In the healthcare sector, Mr. Kunihiko Hirabayashi said that demand from Vietnam is increasing and is a promising destination for Japan's cooperation in research and development of pharmaceutical products and medical equipment.
Mr. Kunihiko Hirabayashi, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Japan Center (AJC), shared about new areas with much room for cooperation for businesses of the two countries.
Mr. Kunihiko Hirabayashi assessed that Vietnam is not only a smart investment destination for Japanese investors, it is also a great place to live - with a rich culture, friendly people, world-class cuisine, tourist attractions, education and infrastructure that are improving day by day.
At the conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - Deputy Director of the Center for Trade and Investment Promotion (Trade Promotion Agency) introduced business and investment cooperation opportunities with Vietnam in the trend of changing global production and supply value chains. According to Ms. Thuy, Vietnam has many trade advantages, thanks to its geographical location as a gateway to Southeast Asia, a developed seaport system, abundant labor resources and competitive costs, and diverse and high-quality export products. The Vietnamese government is promoting administrative reform and infrastructure investment to support import and export activities, supporting businesses through a variety of trade promotion programs, providing market information and technical assistance.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy said that according to a survey by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on the trend of continuing to expand business, Vietnam was ranked as a desirable destination to expand business activities in ASEAN, more than 60% of Japanese enterprises plan to continue to expand in Vietnam in the future.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy emphasized that Vietnam proactively and selectively attracts and integrates foreign investment based on quality, efficiency, technological progress and environmental friendliness. Priority is given to projects with new, high-tech, “green” technology with modern management systems, spillover effects, technology transfer, and connections to global supply and value chains.
Immediately after the conference, 27 Vietnamese enterprises participated in an exciting trade program with Japanese enterprises, connecting with many prospective Japanese partners in a variety of fields such as agricultural products, food (including cassava starch, dried and frozen seafood, tea, coffee, spices, cakes, fruits, etc.); mechanical and electronic components, construction materials, household products, handicrafts, perfumes, etc.
