US Defense Secretary: Trump Administration appreciates cooperation with Vietnam

According to the People's Army newspaper, General Phan Van Giang - Minister of National Defense - today had bilateral meetings with Defense Ministers of several countries on the occasion of attending the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Meeting with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Minister Phan Van Giang affirmed that Vietnam always considers the US one of its important partners. The Minister hopes that the two countries will continue to cooperate further on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, respect for international law, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political regime; contributing to maintaining security, peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense is ready to participate in effectively implementing the content of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development between the two countries in the field of defense and security; and hopes that the US and Vietnam will actively negotiate to soon reach a suitable tariff policy that is beneficial to both sides.

Minister Phan Van Giang assessed that defense cooperation between the two countries was implemented on the basis of direction from senior leaders and signed documents and agreements, achieving practical results in many fields.

General Phan Van Giang hopes that the two countries' Ministries of Defense will closely coordinate to carry out meaningful cooperation activities, contributing to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations in 2025. He invited Minister Pete Hegseth to pay an official visit to Vietnam at the earliest possible time.

He affirmed that the administration of US President Donald Trump highly values ​​and values ​​the cooperative relationship with Vietnam; and hopes to continue to further promote the US-Vietnam relationship in general and bilateral defense cooperation in particular, especially in overcoming the consequences of war.

Meeting with New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins , Minister Phan Van Giang affirmed that Vietnam always values ​​the relationship and appreciates New Zealand's potential and position.

The two countries share many views and interests in maintaining peace, stability and development in the region and the world on the basis of respecting the interests of all countries and international law. The upgrading of the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is an important milestone, opening up new opportunities for cooperation, including in defense.

Minister Judith Collins emphasized that Vietnam is one of New Zealand's priorities in Southeast Asia. New Zealand wishes to further develop the relationship between the two countries, in depth and substance, including defense.

The two Ministers agreed to promote defense cooperation in existing fields and consider expanding to other fields where both sides have needs and capabilities such as cyber security, military medicine, defense industry, etc.

Meeting with Singaporean Minister for Public Service and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing , Minister Phan Van Giang said that upgrading the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership opens a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. In particular, defense and security cooperation will have new, stronger, more substantial and effective steps forward, continuing to be one of the important pillars of the Vietnam - Singapore relationship.

Vietnam highly appreciates Singapore's position, role and positive contributions to international and regional issues, especially within the ASEAN framework. Vietnam hopes that Singapore will continue to promote its role, together with Vietnam and ASEAN countries, to promote the implementation of the goals of the ASEAN Community.

Minister Phan Van Giang was pleased with the results of the two sides' reliable and substantive defense cooperation, including cooperation between the military, service branches, security, maritime safety; training; exchanges of young officers; consultation and mutual support at multilateral forums and mechanisms...

Minister Chan Chun Sing welcomed General Phan Van Giang to attend the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue. He agreed that defense cooperation has contributed significantly to enhancing political trust and deepening relations between the two countries.

He affirmed that he will continue to closely coordinate with the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense to implement the agreed cooperation contents.

Minister Phan Van Giang and Minister Chan Chun Sing hope that the two sides will effectively maintain existing consultation and dialogue mechanisms; study the establishment of an Air Force Consultation mechanism; and enhance training cooperation.

In addition, the two countries need to cooperate in military, service, search and rescue, maritime security; promote military medical cooperation, cyber security cooperation, including receiving officers from the Cyber ​​Warfare Command under the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense to work at the ADMM Information and Cyber ​​Security Center of the Singapore Ministry of National Defense...
