Mr. Bui Dong Giang's family, An Binh commune (Lac Thuy) invested in raising chickens on a large scale.
Lac Thuy chicken is a native breed of chicken, raised by people in Phu Thanh, An Binh, Thong Nhat communes... in the traditional way for many generations. This breed of chicken has the characteristics of firm, delicious meat, crispy skin, high lean meat ratio, suitable for the taste of consumers in the North. However, in the past, the breeding was still small-scale, fragmented, not ensuring the scale and standards for commodity development, the output was mainly in the form of selling at traditional markets or through small traders.
Since implementing Project No. 03/DA-TU of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on agricultural development associated with product consumption and new rural construction, Lac Thuy district has identified Lac Thuy chicken as one of the key products that need to be invested in and developed according to the value chain, from breeds, feed, breeding techniques to slaughtering, packaging, and consumption. Following the orientation, the District People's Committee has coordinated with functional agencies to implement programs to support breeds, provide technical training, build biosafety and VietGAP breeding models, etc. Many households have boldly invested in expanding their scale, gradually shifting to farm and family farming models. As a result, the whole district now has over 1.65 million chickens, of which Lac Thuy chickens account for over 60% of the total herd. Notably, about 80% of households raise chickens in the form of farms and family farms, initially creating professionalism and stability in the production stage. Raising Lac Thuy chickens is not only an economic development direction but also a stable livelihood for thousands of households in the district. Many households raise from several thousand to tens of thousands of chickens per batch, earning hundreds of millions of VND per year. The model has been expanded to the communes of Phu Thanh, An Binh, Thong Nhat, Phu Nghia, etc.
In particular, to improve the economic efficiency of local specialties, Lac Thuy district focuses on forming production chains associated with product consumption. A prominent model is the Lac Thuy chicken linkage model in Phu Thanh and An Binh communes - where people, cooperatives and enterprises sign contracts for raising and consuming according to VietGAP standards. Currently, there are 2 cooperatives participating in slaughtering and packaging chicken products, gradually meeting the requirements of traceability and food hygiene and safety. Lac Thuy chicken products have been recognized as meeting the provincial 4-star OCOP standard and are aiming for higher standards for export.
Along with brand building, Lac Thuy district actively promotes products at fairs, Da River fish and shrimp festivals, agricultural events in the capital region... Lac Thuy chicken is also present on online sales channels, e-commerce platforms such as Postmart.vn, Voso.vn... In the period of 2021 - 2023 alone, Lac Thuy chicken eggs achieved sales of 1.35 billion VND through Postmart... In addition, social networks Facebook and Zalo are also used by cooperatives and livestock households to promote products, interact with consumers and receive direct orders.
Mr. Bui Dong Giang, Director of Lac Thuy Chicken Breeding Cooperative, said: Lac Thuy chicken breed has the ability to adapt well to weather conditions, is suitable for year-round farming, and is suitable for many farming models. Currently, the Cooperative has built a connection and comprehensively supported input and output for about 7,000 farming households in the province. On average, each cooperative member raises from 5,000 to 7,000 chickens. Every day, the Cooperative supplies the market with about 10,000 commercial chickens. The selling price ranges from 85,000 to 90,000 VND/kg; after deducting costs, member households can earn a profit of 40 to 50 million VND for 1,000 chickens. Members and the Cooperative's satellite system strictly implement the production process according to OCOP product standards, gradually improving quality, aiming to achieve a 5-star rating for Lac Thuy chicken products.
According to the People's Committee of Lac Thuy district, the goal in the coming time is to continue developing the Lac Thuy chicken brand by promoting bio-safety farming, expanding concentrated farming areas, replicating linkage models... At the same time, strengthening the management of breed quality, farming processes, slaughtering and processing according to stricter standards to target the export market. The application of technology, electronic traceability, QR stamps, and monitoring of farming areas are also prioritized to create trust for domestic and international consumers.
From local chicken breeds to OCOP brands, the journey of Lac Thuy chickens is a vivid demonstration of the effectiveness of restructuring the agricultural sector associated with building new rural areas. This is also one of the "bright spots" that helps Lac Thuy district affirm its position on the agricultural map of Hoa Binh province.
