Russian news agency TASS reported that on the night of July 8 and early morning of July 9, the Russian military (RFAF) launched a major attack on targets deep inside Ukraine. The main target was the Ukrainian defense-industrial complex infrastructure in the west of the country.
Ukraine's Deep State channel reported that the Lutsk Engine Plant, which repairs rocket engines, was attacked by Russian UAVs. At the same time, the number of drones launched into Ukraine's territory was also in the number.
noteworthy
During the night of July 8 and the early morning of July 9, the RFAF set a new record by launching 728 long-range suicide UAVs. In addition, according to information released by the Ukrainian military (AFU), in addition to UAVs, targets in Ukraine were attacked by 14 missiles, including 7 cruise missiles and 6 Kinzhal missiles.
According to the Ukrainian state news agency, citing the AFU spokesman, the AFU air defense forces shot down 296 UAVs and another 415 UAVs "lost their positions". Regarding missiles, the Ukrainian side announced that all cruise missiles were shot down? But the Kinzhal missiles successfully destroyed the target.
The Russian Military Review website reported that the Russian Air Force used Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched missiles to attack Ukrainian targets on the night of July 8. One of the important targets of the attack was the AFU military airport in Ozernoye, Zhytomyr Oblast, located 15 kilometers from the administrative center of the region.
The FIRMS satellite system, designed to provide information on fires and owned by the US space agency NASA, recorded a large-scale fire at the airport. Judging by satellite images of the fire, the airport's infrastructure was severely damaged.
Some information on Ukrainian social networks also said that many explosions were heard at the Ukrainian Air Force base in Ozernoye, Zhytomyr region, after the air strike safety alert was issued. This was a secondary explosion of aviation weapons stored at this facility.
According to military experts, it is very likely that a group of MiG-31K fighter jets of the Russian Air Force launched at least two Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at the target. Judging by the explosion and fire at the airport, the Russian attack on this target was successful.
Ozernoye Airport is the base of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force; Ukrainian Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters are stationed and serve there. In addition, aviation ammunition is stored in warehouses at the airbase.
The mayor of Zhytomyr, Serhiy Sukhomlin, also confirmed the attack on the airport. According to him, the airport infrastructure has been significantly damaged, but no personnel have been killed. Emergency services are working at the site of the attack.
Regarding Russia's "record night of airstrikes", Polish sources, citing the Polish General Staff, said that last night, the Polish Air Force was forced to dispatch fighter jets to conduct combat patrols in the border area close to Ukraine.
The Russian airstrikes were carried out on targets in the Lutsk, Khmelnytskyi and Lviv regions, the Military Review reported. The airstrikes targeted military airfields in Lutsk and Starokostiantyniv, as well as the Lutsk Motor repair enterprise, which repairs and maintains aircraft engines, including the RD-33 engine for MiG-29 fighters.
The Polish General Staff announced that several Polish Air Force fighter jets were scrambled; "the situation is generally under control and forces and means are ready to react quickly in case of a threat."
There is no confirmation yet whether the Polish Air Force helped Ukraine shoot down Russian missiles and UAVs. But officially, Poland does not participate in such interceptions. The sorties of Polish fighter jets are mainly preventive.
The last time the Polish Air Force scrambled its fighter jets was about three weeks ago, when Russian long-range suicide drones and missiles also attacked targets in western Ukraine.
Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, General Syrsky, summarizing the results of the fighting in June, said that the RFAF had increased the number of attacks on targets in Ukraine with long-range suicide missiles and UAVs by 1.6 times. Based on the above record figures from last night, it can be assumed that this trend will continue in July. (photo source Kyiv Post, Ukrinform, TASS).
