According to Russia's TASS news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov made the above statement in an interview with the Parlamentskaya Gezeta newspaper on May 15, 2023.
According to Mr. Ryabkov, the CFE Treaty has had problems for many years, so Russia's withdrawal from the treaty cannot make the situation worse.
He added that the current situation is also not conducive to coming up with new ideas for an alternative to the CFE treaty.
He believes that the world in the coming time will be completely different from the world in 1990 or 1999 and this requires new approaches, including the issue of arms control.
The CFE Treaty was signed between 16 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and 6 members of the Warsaw Pact in 1990 to reduce tensions between the two blocs.
The CFE sets limits on the deployment of conventional armed forces on the European continent and establishes mechanisms for checks.
Russia has long argued that NATO's expansion (including former members of the Warsaw Pact) is undermining the CFE.
In 2007, Russia announced a partial suspension of the CFE on the grounds that new NATO members did not comply with the limits set out in the treaty but still participated in meetings of the joint advisory group.
In 2015, Moscow completely withdrew from the CFE mechanisms because it “had no need to continue participating” and has participated only in a formal sense so far.
