ANTD.VN - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that if Vietnam increases the area of autumn-winter rice by 50,000 hectares to increase rice export opportunities, it can earn more than 100 million USD.

Faced with the situation of world rice prices increasing day by day in the context of many countries restricting or even stopping rice exports, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that if Vietnam increases the autumn-winter rice crop by 50,000 hectares to increase rice export opportunities, Vietnam can earn more than 100 million USD, while ensuring food supply for the world and increasing income for farmers.

Assessing Vietnam's rice export opportunities in the current global food context, Mr. Hoang Trung said that recently there have been many fluctuations related to policy adjustments of some rice exporting countries, such as Russia withdrawing from the grain export agreement, UAE and India banning rice exports.

From that reality, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has carefully considered and evaluated the reasons why countries adjust this policy.

In fact, some countries are affected by El Nino, reducing productivity and facing difficulties in production, so it is normal to adjust rice export policies. However, such adjustments will have an impact on the world rice market.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s viewpoint is to grasp the market situation as well as Vietnam’s rice production to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity, enhance prestige, and expand the market for Vietnamese rice. We are very pleased that up to this point, the total rice cultivation area is still guaranteed to reach 7.1 million hectares, with an output of 43 - 43.5 million tons, achieving the planned output, helping to balance domestic consumption and serve exports,” said Mr. Hoang Trung.

Specifically, domestic consumption is about 30 million tons. After balancing like that, we can rest assured that there are still 14 - 15 million tons of paddy, equivalent to 7 - 7.5 million tons of rice for export while still ensuring enough output to serve domestic demand.

According to Mr. Trung, with the current new situation, it must be affirmed that businesses have many advantages in negotiating and signing contracts at the most favorable prices. There is information that in recent days, when negotiating and signing contracts, the price of rice has increased by 30 - 40 USD/ton.

The agricultural sector is calculating to increase 50,000 hectares of rice cultivation to increase exports.

Farmers also have the opportunity to increase their income thanks to increased rice prices; Vietnam has the opportunity to expand the market share of Vietnamese rice in traditional and new markets.

The leader of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also said that he will closely follow the actual situation, weather, and announcements from the hydrometeorological agency, especially the situation of rain, drought and salinity, to adjust the crop schedule and the most reasonable variety structure; direct specialized agencies to strengthen supervision, prevent disease outbreaks to ensure rice productivity and quality.

The Ministry has also assigned the Department of Crop Production, Irrigation and Plant Protection to review the drought and salinity situation, to see if it is possible to increase the autumn-winter crop area, and how much increase is reasonable. According to calculations, if the autumn-winter rice area increases by 50,000 hectares, Vietnam can earn an additional 100 million USD, supplying food to the world and bringing income to farmers.

The Ministry also requested specialized agencies of the Ministry such as Plant Protection, Department of Management, Processing and Market Development to handle technical barriers in the spirit of creating maximum conditions for export enterprises as soon as possible to expand new markets and diversify markets.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, Vietnam's rice export prices are increasing day by day. Specifically, the price of Vietnam's 5% broken rice on August 3 reached 598 USD/ton, and 25% broken rice reached 578 USD/ton; while on July 28, the price of Vietnam's 5% broken rice was 563 USD/ton, and 25% broken rice was 543 USD/ton.
