Auto industry warns of chip shortage risk
European car companies are warning of risks to production due to chip shortages caused by the current dispute involving chipmaker Nexperia - one of the world's leading names in manufacturing common chips used in cars.
Volkswagen, Germany's leading carmaker, has warned of short-term production disruptions as supplies of Nexperia chips from China are disrupted, even though the company does not directly buy chips from the company. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association has previously said that finding alternative chip sources could take months.
The incident began after the Dutch government took control of Nexperia, a chipmaker headquartered in the Netherlands, after its Chinese parent company, Wingtech, was blacklisted by the US. China then temporarily halted exports of finished Nexperia products from its factories in the country in retaliation.
John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, warned that if chip exports are not restored quickly, auto production in the US and many other countries will be disrupted, with widespread effects on related industries. He called on all parties to find a solution soon to avoid disruptions to the supply chain.
Sigrid de Vries, Director General of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, stressed that despite efforts by manufacturers to diversify their supply chains, risks cannot be completely eliminated. She called on the countries concerned to come up with practical solutions to address the situation as soon as possible.
According to Ian Riches, vice president of global automotive at research firm TechInsights, Nexperia currently has about 40% of the chip market share in the semiconductor and diode segment used in cars - a large enough proportion to seriously affect the entire industry. Meanwhile, car manufacturers are facing rising costs due to the tariff policy imposed by the US. According to the latest forecast from Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new car in the US has surpassed the $ 50,000 mark for the first time.
