People in Ho Chi Minh City and many provinces in the West will face flooding due to high tides in the middle of next week.

Water levels will continue to rise rapidly following the high tide in early October of the lunar calendar. The peak of this high tide for the Saigon - Dong Nai river system may occur on November 14 - 15 (October 2 - 3 of the lunar calendar); at Phu An and Nha Be stations, it will be approximately level 3, potentially causing flooding in many low-lying areas.

Similar to the Mekong Delta provinces, at 7:00 a.m. on November 12, the water level at My Thuan station on the Tien River was at approximately level 2, and Can Tho station on the Hau River was at level 1. This high tide is forecasted to peak on November 15-16 (October 3-4 of the lunar calendar); at My Thuan station, it could reach 1.9-1.95m, 10-15cm above level 3, and at Can Tho, the water level is from 1.95-2m, approximately or about 10cm lower than level 3. In coastal areas, the water level is at level 2-3, except for Ganh Hao station, which could be 15-25cm higher than level 3.

During the recent high tides, many places in Ho Chi Minh City and localities in the West such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Hau Giang ... were severely flooded when the river water level exceeded level 3.

The Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning (SIWRP) also noted that in coastal areas, high tides are forecast to peak on November 16. Water levels at some stations exceed level 3 by 5-24 cm and remain high until November 18. With the forecasted water levels, there is a high risk of tidal flooding in the provinces of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, and Tra Vinh. Authorities and people in the above localities need to take proactive response measures.
