After receiving the official announcement of joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023, this morning (November 1), the authorities of Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province organized a parade to spread joy as well as show the consensus and support of the people for becoming a member of the network.
The parade includes artisans, folk artists, students, tourists, youth, women and representatives of local departments, branches and organizations throughout the city.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh - Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee said that becoming a member of UNESCO's Global Creative Cities Network in the field of handicrafts and folk arts is a milestone and turning point in the city's new journey. "The entire people of Hoi An City feel honored, proud and happy with their beloved city. Joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a favorable condition for Hoi An in positioning its brand, promoting its image in all fields of creative culture, and at the same time, it is a commitment to a new journey of action" , Mr. Lanh said.
Joining the parade, Mr. Huynh Phuong Do - a famous artisan who crafts bamboo handicrafts in Hoi An ancient town - shared: "We are very proud that Hoi An will become a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023. Craftsmen like me will try to produce many beautiful works, contributing to promoting the image of people, land of Hoi An in particular and Vietnam in general to international friends."
The city currently has 5 traditional craft villages with nearly 50 active handicrafts such as: carpentry, pottery, lantern making, bamboo and coconut making, garment making, leather making... According to statistics, Hoi An city currently has a total of 658 small enterprises and 1,710 business households operating in the field of handicrafts and folk arts. It is estimated that about 4,000 direct workers have an average income of 3,500-4,000 USD per year from handicrafts and folk arts.

The carpentry artisan is proud to have contributed to Hoi An's success in becoming a member of the UNESCO Global Creative Cities Network.

In the coming time, in addition to continuing activities to preserve and promote the field of handicrafts and folk arts, Hoi An will have to carry out committed initiatives such as: Kim Bong Carpentry Project - Inspiring Creativity, Nurturing Young Talents, Hoi An Creativity in Digital Space and international initiatives such as: International Folk Art Festival, International Lantern Festival, Hoi An Creative House. In addition, the city will facilitate and promote development and creativity in other fields; connect, exchange, and share experiences with other members inside and outside the network; increase activities to expand the network...
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was established in 2004 with the aim of enhancing cooperation between cities that have been recognized as creative, considering this a strategic element for sustainable development in the economic , social and environmental fields.
As of October 2022, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network has 295 member cities from 90 countries and territories, including 59 cities in the field of crafts and folk arts.
In 2023, through a very strict assessment process by the Secretariat and member cities on Hoi An's dossier and practical activities, the Creative Cities Network Secretariat announced Hoi An as an official member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
