Dan tranh artist Thanh Le - sister of dan bau artist Pham Duc Thanh - said that her brother passed away at 5:41 a.m. on August 22, at the age of 69.
She shared that over the years, artist Pham Duc Thanh has had many underlying diseases, has to go to the hospital for dialysis three times a week, and recently developed heart disease.
"Just a few days ago, my brother was discharged from the hospital and last night he called Germany to talk to me. But this morning, he passed away suddenly," artist Thanh Le said with a choked voice.
According to the plan, the family will bring his body back to his hometown Ninh Binh for the funeral before cremation. Artist Thanh Le will return from Germany to join his relatives in arranging the funeral for his brother.

The passing of Dan Bau artist Pham Duc Thanh has left colleagues and audiences heartbroken. Many veteran artists shared their memories of him and expressed their condolences.
Singer Quoc Dai wrote: "I love your guitar and this is the rare time I get to meet you. Now hearing the news of your passing, I really don't want to believe it. I will always remember your gentle smile."

Artist Pham Duc Thanh was born in 1956 in Ninh Binh, is one of the typical monochord artists of Vietnam. He showed his musical talent early, at the age of 4 he knew how to play the drum, at the age of 5 he practiced the mandolin, at the age of 6 he got acquainted with the two-stringed fiddle and monochord.
Among many musical instruments, he chose to stick with the monochord - a unique one-stringed instrument of the nation.
In 1974, he worked at the Vietnam Cheo Theater, then went to Ho Chi Minh City to study traditional music of the Central and Southern regions. In October 1983, he graduated as valedictorian of the Vietnamese Traditional Music Research major. Two years later, he won the first prize in the national monochord competition.
In 2006, Pham Duc Thanh settled in Canada, opened a class to teach the monochord and traditional music, and persistently promoted the instrument to international friends. He was once praised by ART television (Canada) as an artist with great contributions to preserving and developing traditional Vietnamese music.
He also participated in many international music festivals, performing with professor Tran Van Khe, famous Chinese pipa artist Liu Fang...
In the country, his guitar is associated with many familiar works, especially the solo Mother's Heart . In 2018, he organized the first big live show in Vietnam called Doc Huyen Cam at the Hanoi Opera House.
