Meritorious Artist Thai Son was born in 1983, from Hung Yen. He was a student of the Cheo class at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema. After graduating in 2006, Thai Son joined the Vietnam Cheo Theatre.
In addition to his achievements in the Cheo stage, Thai Son has made his mark with a series of supporting roles with his own unique colors such as Tu "sissy" in Under the shade of the happy tree , A Re in The war without borders , Dieu in Black medicine . Many audiences commented that Thai Son is very suitable for the roles of tough, individualistic characters. He has just been awarded the title of Meritorious Artist for the 10th time.
In 2024, Thai Son will play the lead role in the film Cheer Up, Brothers, directed by Vu Minh Tri. This will be a completely different type of role but still within the male artist's forte. Thai Son had a quick chat with VietNamNet reporter about his latest project.
Acting silly and honest is still my forte.
– Is Thai Son's new role in "Cheer up, brothers" very different from his previous characters?
I don't know if Thang in Cheer Up, Brothers, will create something special for the film or not, but it is a different character compared to the roles I have played. Thang is not like A Re in Cuoc chien khong lien, not Tu in Dui shac cay hanh phuc or Dieu in Biet duoc den. Each role will have a different personality and appearance. Thang's character does not have a very special appearance, but has a rustic, simple, sincere, and even a bit silly personality.
Thai Son's latest role has an honest, naive personality.
– Through the movie introduction, I see that Thang speaks slowly, even a bit foolishly. Does that make it difficult for Thai Son to get into character?
It is true that Thang has a naive and sincere personality. People see me playing the role of an extrovert but I am actually an introvert and sincere person. If someone doesn't know me, I can't open up and talk much.
I think this is still a type of role that is within my forte. It is not true to say that it is not difficult because every role has its own difficulties. The actor must be the one to conquer that. With the role of Thang, I am 80% satisfied with myself up to this point.
– Is the slow, steady dialogue something you intentionally created for this character? Are you afraid of negative reactions from the audience?
I think that the shaping, shaping or creating a character must first be the intention of the scriptwriter and director, then the creativity of the actors. Thang's slow, monotonous dialogues are the intention of the crew. I am not afraid of the audience's negative reaction because of this. I think the dosage, intensity and nature of each segment are carefully measured by the director. The director will definitely not let the character become boring and annoying.
Artist Thai Son doesn't care about playing a main or supporting role in a movie.
– People often refer to you with the nickname “chameleon” of TV series because the supporting characters all have highlights that attract viewers. Is that Thai Son's intention or does it come naturally?
Whether it is a main or supporting role, the crew has calculated the character's color and personality. Personally, I only contribute to that by being creative and performing well on set.
I am a multi-personality person.
– Recently, Thai Son often appears in VFC films. Are you afraid that you will be boring in the eyes of the audience?
I don't think I've been acting in movies that often. In 2024, Cheer Up, Guys, was the first movie I participated in. However, I think an actor, no matter how little or how much they appear, must overcome the challenge of renewing themselves and improving everything so that no role is the same as another.
– Doan Quoc Dam himself commented that he is not as handsome as Manh Truong and Viet Anh, so he wants to build an image of playing outstanding supporting roles and be highly appreciated. Do you think you will follow a similar path?
Every day I look in the mirror and take pictures and feel that I am not a male god, not handsome. But I always think that each flower has its own scent, its own value. I always remind myself to do well the things that are my strengths. Trying and making efforts will gradually make you successful, make an impression as well as have a place in the hearts of the audience.
– Which movie did Thai Son see that changed his life and career significantly?
After the film Under the shade of the happy tree by director Vu Truong Khoa, I found that I also made a little impression on the audience. That was the film that set the stage for me to continuously appear in recent films. And of course, the more the audience knows and cares, the more work the actors themselves have to do, and the salary is also a little higher.
– It is said that the tough roles are more suitable for you. Is Thai Son in real life like in the movies?
I think I have a mixed personality. When I’m under a lot of pressure, I can be a bit sarcastic. On the other hand, when things are going well, I can be calm.
