In the recent historic floods that occurred in some provinces of the South Central and Central Highlands, student Phan Tan Phu (living in Hoa My commune, Dak Lak province) studying at Lac Hong University (Tran Bien ward, Dong Nai province) unfortunately lost both his parents. This was a huge shock to this student, along with an older brother and a younger brother who were also in school age.
Difficulties surround students in flood-affected areas
Student Phan Tan Phu shared: After the big flood hit Hoa My commune, upon hearing the news of his parents' death, he asked for leave from school to return home to take care of his parents' funeral. When his parents suddenly passed away, he did not know what would happen to his studies, because for a long time, the tuition, food, and monthly accommodation for his two brothers studying at universities in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City were mainly provided by their parents. Moreover, if he continued studying, there would be no one at home to take care of his youngest brother, who is in 5th grade this year, and no one would take care of his food and studies.
Dong Nai supports many students in flood-affected areas
During the period of increasing support for Dak Lak province to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and floods, the working delegation of Dong Nai province visited and supported many families with children studying in Dong Nai. In particular, Mr. Phan Tan Phu in Hoa My commune, a student of Lac Hong University who lost his parents in the flood, received the highest support of over 30 million VND. The Department of Education and Training of Dong Nai province requested universities and colleges in the province to strengthen their review and have appropriate support policies for students from other provinces who suffered losses due to natural disasters and floods.
Meanwhile, student Nguyen Thi Ngan (residing in Hoa Thinh commune, Dak Lak province), a first-year student at Lac Hong University, said: The recent big flood completely collapsed her family's house. Many of the family's belongings were swept away by the flood, making her already difficult family even more difficult. After the flood, she received 2 million VND from the school to cover her living expenses, but the coming days will be very difficult for her, because the big flood has caused her family heavy damage.
Meanwhile, student Pham Thi Thanh Nhi, who is studying at the Dong Nai Forestry University Branch (Trang Bom Commune, Dong Nai Province), said: Her house is in Quy Nhon Dong Ward (Gia Lai Province). In the recent historic flood, her family suffered heavy damage, the house was flooded up to the roof, and all the property in the house was damaged. After the flood, she could not return home to visit her parents, so she was even more worried. To have money to study in the coming days, in addition to going to school, she will have to ask for a part-time job to have money to cover living expenses and maintain her studies.
Mr. Pham Van Manh (residing in Son Thanh commune, Dak Lak province) said: My family has a child who is studying in the second year at Dong Nai University of Technology (Trang Dai ward, Dong Nai province). In addition to the tuition fee borrowed from the Dak Lak Social Policy Bank to pay for his child's tuition, each month he and his wife have to send him an additional 4 million VND to pay for his rent, food and transportation. In the coming months, he does not know where to find money to send to his child, so he is quite worried...
Many students need support
Universities and colleges in Dong Nai currently have a large proportion of students from other provinces coming from the Central and Central Highlands provinces, in which the largest proportion is still students from the provinces: Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri. During this year's storm season, many students have families whose houses and property have been damaged, especially some students who were unlucky enough to have lost relatives, in some cases both parents. Therefore, the lives of these students, which are already difficult, have become even more difficult, and the risk of dropping out of school is very high.
More than ever, with the spirit of helping and sharing, students need support from schools and landlords. Associate Professor Dr. Lam Thanh Hien, Principal of Lac Hong University, said: Up to now, the school has approved the first phase, the list of support for nearly 300 lecturers and students whose families suffered losses after the recent historic floods in some provinces of the South Central Coast and the Central Highlands. The support amount for students is 2 million VND/person, and for lecturers is 5 million VND/person. In addition, the school supports students and lecturers from the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Tri who are studying and working at the school and suffered losses due to storms and floods at the same level. The support procedure is quite simple, students just need to declare honestly and the school will approve.
Meanwhile, student Le Van Thanh (from Diem Dien commune, Khanh Hoa province) studying at Dong Nai University of Technology said: "For the past month, my family has not sent me any money to cover my living expenses, so I have to work extra jobs on weekday evenings to take care of myself while waiting for my parents to finish dealing with the flood. Luckily, my landlord in Ward 5, Trang Dai ward was kind enough to support me with a month of free accommodation."
Ms. Dang Thi Hoa, who runs a student accommodation business in Tran Bien Ward, said: Her family's accommodation is mainly rented to students of Lac Hong University. Among them, some of them have suffered heavy losses due to natural disasters and floods in the past. Therefore, Ms. Hoa's family is considering whether any student who is really in difficulty will be given a reduction or exemption of rent for November and December. Ms. Hoa shared: "Many students from the Central and Central Highlands provinces come here to study at university, although poor, they are very hard-working. I am willing to support and help the families of the students to quickly stabilize their lives and studies."
