As an educator and a native of the Central region, Ms. Bui Thi Cam Loan, lecturer at the Faculty of Fashion Technology - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, deeply understands the pain and loss of people after the flood.

"Working overtime" for our beloved Central region

Seeing the scene of the school in ruins, the books and clothes of the students washed away, she could not help but worry. Initially, Ms. Loan planned to donate cash but realizing the real need of the students in the flooded area was the lack of uniforms to go to school, she came up with a more practical idea.

While sewing shirts, Ms. Cam Loan also guided students of the faculty.

The school's workshop has about 200 sewing machines.

Taking advantage of her expertise, Ms. Loan launched a uniform sewing movement. This project not only timely supports her hometown but also provides a valuable opportunity for students to practice their skills and at the same time raise their sense of responsibility towards the community.

The support comes not only from the school's lecturers and students, but also from a lot of alumni. "Alumni support fabric, buttons, thread and participate in making patterns... Teachers and students in the department take on assembling and sewing. Even though it is the peak time to prepare for final exams, everyone's study and work schedules are different, but everyone tries to contribute" - Ms. Loan said.

When one student is busy, another student replaces him. The good tailor takes on the difficult sewing steps, and the new student is in charge of cutting thread, ironing, and packing the clothes.

What touched Ms. Loan the most was the spirit of the students. Some of them were willing to put aside their personal matters and even bring their schoolwork to the workshop to study for the exam after finishing their sewing machines late at night.

Sister sends love through uniform

Thanh Xuan, a student of the Fashion Technology Department, said she has been sewing with Ms. Loan for 4 days. "Because of our continuous study and exam schedules, whenever we have free time, we rush to the workshop. Some students have just finished their exams and rushed to the workshop, working through lunch and evening to meet the deadline. Everyone hopes that the most neat clothes will soon reach the children," Xuan shared.

Among the students working hard at their desks, there were some who participated not only because they wanted to share the difficulties but also because of the deep sympathy of a child far from home heading towards the flood area.

Student Tra My said she was also a child of Phu Yen province (old). My said that most of the people in the village make a living from farming. Some households have to borrow money from agents to buy seedlings and fertilizers. When the harvest is good, they have to pay back both principal and interest, when the harvest is bad, they have to pay more debt. This year, due to the continuous storms and floods, it is considered a total loss.

After class, Ms. Cam Loan took the time to go down to the workshop to check progress and guide students.

My confided that children in the countryside rarely get to buy new clothes, usually only when their clothes are completely torn. Therefore, every stitch of My's needle and thread today carries the love of a child, a sister far from home. "If I'm lucky, I hope the uniform I sewed today can be given to my younger brother in the countryside or to the children in the neighborhood" - My said.

With the current amount of donated fabric, Ms. Loan estimates she will be able to make about 300 sets, each set costing more than 200,000 VND.

After this time, the department will continue to receive donations to make more uniforms and send them to other students. The uniforms are expected to be on their way to the flood-affected students this weekend.
