One of the very interesting surprises of Grammy - the biggest music award on the planet this year. While many Asian artists who are "regular guests" went empty-handed, Vietnam, for the first time, had only one representative on the nomination list.
The person named is artist Duy Dao, nominated in the category of Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package (Best album design) with the album "Gieo" by the band Ngọt.
This is not the first time a Vietnamese art product has been named in the most prestigious playgrounds on the planet like this. Before that, in early 2023, the documentary "The Children in the Mist" by director Ha Le Diem was shortlisted for the Oscar.
The fact that for two consecutive years, Vietnamese artists and their products have been named in the Oscar shortlist or Grammy nominations is not only a breakthrough or remarkable progress of each individual in each specific field. It is also a breakthrough and progress of the entire film and music industry in particular and the cultural industry of Vietnam in general.
Of course, this breakthrough is just a "swallow" type of development, and cannot yet create "springs". But these "swallows" are signs of prosperity and hope for the "springs" of Vietnamese music and cinema.
This is extremely meaningful in the context of the performing arts sector including music and cinema being identified by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as one of the 12 key sectors of the cultural industry for investment and development.
For the products of the performing arts sector to be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers and become part of the cultural industry - in the sense that they can be sold for money like Korea or Thailand - we still have a lot of work to do and need a lot of time to do.
It is about building an ecosystem, starting with seemingly small things like building studios - standard "production factories" so that the film industry does not have to "run on rice" as director Nguyen Quang Dung likened.
Bigger is a development policy and support from the Government , backing and support from large enterprises and corporations. And finally, the most important is still the investment strategy to produce talented people in all fields.
Let’s take a look back at artist Duy Dao’s journey. Before being nominated for a Grammy, he worked for more than 10 years in California (USA), then returned to Vietnam to establish Studio DUY in Vietnam. He has experience working with many big brands such as Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Logitech, Oppo and Apple Music…
In Vietnam, Duy Dao is also the person behind the global identity change design for a milk company that caused a stir earlier this year. He has won prestigious awards such as the Art Directors Club Award (USA), the International Design Award (USA)...
His nomination for a Grammy in the category of "Best Album Design" is not a coincidence or a fluke!
