According to information from the Youth Theater, Doctor, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh - former Director of the Youth Theater, former Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts, the first female contemporary theater director of Vietnam to receive the State Literature and Arts Award in 2012, passed away on the evening of September 3, at the age of 85.
Doctor, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh was born in 1941 in a family with a tradition of mandarin education.
Her father, Pham Khac Hoe, from Duc Tho (Ha Tinh), was a famous intellectual who drafted the abdication edict for King Bao Dai in 1945 and was trusted by President Ho Chi Minh . Her mother was from Hue, the younger sister of poet Ung Binh Thuc Da Thi, the niece of Mien Tham and the great-granddaughter of King Minh Mang.
Inheriting her father's love of literature and her mother's sweet Hue singing voice, Pham Thi Thanh was passionate about culture and arts from a young age.
At the age of 14, with the encouragement of musicians Luu Huu Phuoc, Nguyen Xuan Khoat, and Dang Dinh Hung, she joined the Central Performing Arts Troupe, beginning her artistic career.
At the age of 16, Pham Thi Thanh fell in love with People's Artist Dao Mong Long, who was 30 years older than her. This marriage only lasted a short time, leaving her with two children.
In 1970, she was sent by the State to Russia to study stage directing. After 7 years of study, she returned home and, together with director Ha Nhan, wrote a project to establish the Youth Theater.
The project was accepted, in 1987, the Youth Theater was established, Ms. Ha Nhan was the Director, female director Pham Thi Thanh was the Deputy Director.
During the period 1991-1996, she held the position of Director of the Youth Theater, then Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts.
In the first recruitment course for the Youth Theatre, from more than 1,200 candidates, only 20 were selected. Among them, many artists have now become big names such as People's Artists: Lan Huong, Le Khanh, Anh Tu, Minh Hang; Meritorious Artists: Chi Trung, Ngoc Huyen, Duc Hai...
Throughout her life, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh directed more than 200 plays, of which nearly 20 won Gold medals and several won Silver medals.

People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh is also a member of the Executive Board of the International Theater Association for Children and Youth ASSITEJ and President of the ASSITEJ Vietnam Association.
She has participated in many foreign theater art projects in Vietnam, making efforts to bring traditional national art into schools.
She is also Vice President of the Vietnam UNESCO Association, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Literature and Arts Association, a delegate of the Hanoi People's Council, and a lecturer at the School of Theater and Cinema...
In 2012, Doctor, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh was the first female contemporary theater director in Vietnam to be awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, recognizing her great contributions to the country's theater.
Throughout her artistic career, People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh has been considered by the profession as an example of hard work and dedication to art.
