The play “Ngoc Thu” (The Gem) – a stage project bringing together Vietnamese and German artists will be presented to Hanoi audiences in 3 performances on September 26, 27, 28 at the Youth Theater.

The focus of “Ngoc Thu” is the journey of young people searching for a home, thereby revealing the social behaviors that shape contemporary life, the desires of life in constantly changing cities. The apartment is not only real estate but also a symbol of aspiration between dream and reality.

There we encounter the great stories of the times: the struggles with urban life, the reflections on greed and desire, or the different aspects of society undergoing urbanization.

The creative team includes screenwriter Thomas Köck – one of the most influential playwrights in contemporary Germany; director Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Head of the Youth Theater Troupe; stage artist Lina Oanh Nguyen – who practices art in parallel in Vietnam and Germany.

The project marks many important milestones for Vietnamese theater: For the first time, a famous German playwright wrote specifically for a Vietnamese theater, and for the first time, the Youth Theater collaborated with German-Vietnamese stage designer Lina Oanh Nguyen.

Sharing with the press on September 23, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Si Tien, Director of the Youth Theater, said that the special appeal that the play "Ngoc Thu" brings does not only come from the story itself.

According to Mr. Nguyen Si Tien, the visual and audio elements combined with the poetic dramatic language and the powerful acting of the artists will bring about a most special approach to the stage. There, we will encounter both the contemporary creative language that is prominent on the German stage and the unique creations of the Youth Theatre.

Responding to a reporter from VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, screenwriter Thomas Köck said he is always interested in topics about young people because there, he is free to create, not constrained by any framework. That is the reason he is excited to cooperate with the Vietnam Youth Theatre in the project "Ngoc Thu."

According to screenwriter Thomas Köck, contemporary German and Vietnamese societies have many similarities, such as the fast pace of urban life and the struggle of young people to find a home. Through this project, the artists hope to contribute to a meaningful artistic dialogue with Vietnam’s dynamic theatre community, promoting cross-cultural collaboration and creative exploration .

The play is performed in Vietnamese with English subtitles./.
