According to the announcement, the shooting occurred at a security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, near the White House in Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was inside the White House; however, the President was not in danger and did not need to be evacuated.
Initial reports indicate that a man approached the security checkpoint, then suddenly pulled a gun from his pocket and fired at the officers on duty.
The U.S. Secret Service immediately responded to neutralize the threat. The suspect was shot and critically wounded at the scene and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, but he did not survive.
The U.S. Secret Service said no law enforcement officers were injured in the shootout. However, a passerby was hit by gunfire during the ensuing chaos. Their current health status has not been released.
US officials have also not yet determined whether the bullet that injured the passerby came from the suspect's gun or from the security forces during the shootout.
Reuters quoted a U.S. law enforcement official as saying the suspect was identified as someone exhibiting signs of mental disorder. The suspect had previously been placed under a "keep-away order" related to security concerns, but their identity has not been officially released.
Following the incident, the entire area around the White House was temporarily sealed off for investigation. Many central Washington DC roads were blocked for hours, while special forces, police, and medical personnel were heavily deployed around the scene.
Several witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots near the White House before security forces brought the situation under control. Tourists and residents in the surrounding area were asked to leave the area quickly.
Federal investigators are currently working to determine the suspect's motives and assess whether the incident is related to a planned attack on federal agencies.
The latest shooting further heightens concerns about security and gun violence in the United States, particularly in sensitive areas involving the federal government and the White House.
