The new "airport director" duo are Akita dogs, "Rensui" and "Ruka". These two dogs have the same mother, and their owner is Ms. Masato Chiba, 67 years old, from Odate city (Akita prefecture).
The decision to appoint him was made by Kensuke Ishida, Mayor of Odate and also head of the airport service promotion council.
The decision was made to mark the 10th anniversary of the initiative to deploy Akita dogs to welcome passengers arriving at Odate-Noshiro Airport next June.
The "airport directors" have a simple job. They are led around to greet passengers on flights that have just landed, and take photos with them.
Dogs Rensui and Ruka will turn 4 years old on May 23.
Mayor Ishida expressed hope that the presence of Akita dogs will bring warmth and joy to passengers arriving at the airport, and at the same time promote the charm of the area.
The Akita dog, whose Sino-Vietnamese name is Thu Dien Khuyen, is a native dog breed of Akita prefecture, with origins that can be traced back to the 1630s. Adult individuals reach a height of about 60 cm and a weight of 30 to 50 kg.
The 2009 blockbuster film "Hachi: A Dog's Tale" starring Richard Gere brought special attention to this breed.
However, the number of Akita dogs is decreasing in Japan, from 6,671 in 2017 to 1,832 in 2023.
