Bustling nearshore exploitation
Coming to Ben Do area - Phan Ri Cua commune ( Lam Dong province) these days, we can see the bustling atmosphere of fishermen when their boats dock and bring back all kinds of mackerel, silver pomfret, betel nut, squid... According to fishermen here, in the first months of 2025, the northeast wind blew strongly, the waves were big, the weather was unfavorable, so fishermen limited going to sea. However, the coastal waters still have special marine resources, fishing activities of local fishermen still take place all year round, the output of the southern fish crop accounts for 70% of the total annual catch.
Mr. Tran Be (Phan Ri Cua commune) was carrying baskets of fresh silver carp to the shore and said: “Starting from April, the weather has been calmer, so fishing boats in the open sea and coastal areas have taken advantage of the opportunity to stay at sea. Most of the boats here go out to sea in the afternoon and return to shore the next morning, bringing with them all kinds of fish such as mackerel, threadfin, mullet, herring, etc., mostly squid. Some fishermen change their nets to catch silver carp, tuna, mackerel, etc. Because it is the beginning of the southern fishing season, the amount of fish is still small compared to last year. Each lucky trip can catch 3-4 quintals, otherwise about 1-2 quintals/day. The output is low, but in return, oil prices have decreased and market prices are higher than last year, so fishermen are very happy and excited. We are hoping that in July and August, seafood resources will be more abundant.”
Although the southern fishing season has just begun, most fishing boats in the province have gone offshore to exploit seafood. Many fishermen earn more than 1 million VND per day, helping to improve people's lives somewhat. In Mui Ne ward (Lam Dong province) this season, fishermen are also rushing to the sea to catch seafood such as shrimp, crab, mackerel, mackerel, etc. This place is famous for being a sea area with a lot of anchovies, appearing densely from the 4th to the 10th lunar month. However, according to the experience of fishermen who specialize in scooping and scooping, anchovies have an erratic yield, so it is necessary to have experience in "hunting" for a group of fish for that boat to have a good season. Mr. Tran Van Thanh - a fisherman who scoops and scoops said that last April, there was a period of dense anchovy formation, fishermen who went fishing continuously shared a few million VND per day, everyone was happy. The weather has been windy for the past few days, so we are waiting for favorable weather to go out to sea again because anchovies follow the currents and appear in large numbers when the weather is calm. Hopefully, by August, the weather will be favorable and the anchovies will appear in large numbers again, with abundant seafood resources for fishermen to have a bumper harvest of shrimp and fish.

Offshore ships eagerly set sail
Not only fishing boats in the open sea and near the shore are operating vigorously, but offshore fishing boats in localities such as Lien Huong commune, Phan Thiet ward, Phu Thuy ward, La Gi ward, Phu Quy special zone... are also taking advantage of favorable weather to go offshore, hoping for a bountiful new fishing season. To prepare for this year's southern fishing season, from the end of 2024, taking advantage of the winter fishing season, fisherman Truong Van Tam - Phan Thiet ward (Lam Dong province) has invested funds to repair machinery, equip with LED lights, modern equipment, such as: GPS, fish finder, seawater filter into fresh water, net... When encountering large fish schools, fishermen only focus on fishing capacity to achieve the highest efficiency.
Mr. Tam said: “The southern fishing season is the most important fishing season of the year, so from the beginning of the year, many offshore fishing boats have been pulled up to the dock to be painted, repaired, and have their durability increased, and their rudders, propellers, machinery, and equipment checked to be ready for fishing. With trawling and purse seining, fishermen often catch seafood in the upper and middle layers of the sea surface such as mackerel, tuna, scad, threadfin, and pomfret. Since the beginning of the year, my family's boat has made 3 trips, each lasting 12-15 days. Although it is still the beginning of the southern fishing season, there have been many streams of scad, tuna, squid, etc., so most of the offshore fishing boats are very excited, and the catch is relatively stable. In addition, thanks to the application of modern technology in fishing, each trip my boat brings in about 10 tons of seafood. After deducting expenses, each boat member gets 7-9 tons of seafood. million VND/trip".

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Lam Dong province has more than 8,400 fishing vessels with a length of 6 meters or more, of which nearly 2,000 vessels with a length of 15 meters or more have installed VMS monitoring equipment. With a sea area of 52,000 km2 under management, Lam Dong sea is one of the three largest fishing grounds in the country. In recent years, the province's fishing fleet has made significant progress, with fishermen boldly investing in building new large boats with fairly synchronous equipment. The number of fishing vessels with a length of 15 meters or more has increased rapidly in terms of quantity, capacity and power.
The provincial agricultural sector always encourages fishing vessels to boldly apply scientific advances to improve their fishing capacity. At the same time, it guides fishermen to organize fishing production at sea in groups and teams to support and share in searching for fishing grounds and fishing objects, and improve production efficiency... At the same time, this is the peak period when the province focuses on drastically and synchronously implementing tasks and solutions to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Therefore, the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing directs the strengthening of solutions so that this work can be carried out continuously, without being affected or interrupted during the process of arranging two-level local governments according to the Party and State's policies, which will come into operation from July 1, 2025.
It is the southern fishing season, so the Provincial IUU Steering Committee requests relevant agencies and local authorities with sea areas to coordinate in controlling and resolutely not allowing fishing vessels that do not meet the conditions for fishing to participate in fishing activities at sea. At the same time, propagate and disseminate laws to fishermen, manage fleets, monitor fishing vessels operating at sea and at ports and prevent and resolutely not allow fishing vessels to violate foreign waters...
From the beginning of March 2025 until now, the weather has been more favorable, marine resources have appeared abundantly, and fishing activities have been effective; the output of exploited aquatic products in the first 6 months of 2025 is estimated at 121,300 tons/plan of 243,200 tons (reaching 49.9% of the plan, up 9.1% over the same period).
