Russia has long been shaping the development of technologically advanced weapons systems, including drones, electronic warfare systems and hypersonic missiles.

Moscow recently highlighted one of its most ambitious defense projects: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the successful test of the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).

This serves as a reminder to the international community that Russia still considers itself a leading country in advanced military technology, according to US Forbes magazine.

The system is significantly larger than most unmanned underwater vehicles and torpedoes: according to available data, it is 20 meters long, 1.8 meters in diameter and weighs about 110 tons. The Poseidon design allows it to carry a nuclear warhead.

Besides its size, Poseidon differs from traditional unmanned underwater vehicles in that it uses a miniature nuclear reactor as its propulsion system, allowing it to operate at long ranges without refueling.

The Forbes publication notes that after launching from a dedicated submarine, Poseidon is capable of staying underwater for long periods of time while maintaining minimal sound and heat levels, making it difficult to detect.

"Its ability to operate deep underwater allows it to bypass most existing defense systems, which are primarily designed to counter missile threats," Forbes magazine wrote.

The successful testing of the Poseidon torpedo gives Russia the ability to ensure nuclear deterrence through superiority in military technology.

Since the Cold War, Moscow's deterrence strategy has relied on the ability to deploy advanced and unconventional systems that far exceed Western defense capabilities, and the new Poseidon is no exception.
