Doctors at the National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital performed a cryoablation intervention for atrial fibrillation.
Patient NTP, 54 years old, has had paroxysmal atrial fibrillation since 2021. Despite being treated with medication, atrial fibrillation episodes still recur frequently, causing fatigue, palpitations, and recently leading to shortness of breath and heart failure.
At the National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital, leading arrhythmia experts quickly consulted and decided to apply the cryotherapy balloon technique. Thanks to that, the intervention was a complete success, opening up a new life for the patient.
Atrial fibrillation is one of the most dangerous heart rhythm disorders, with a high risk of causing heart failure, stroke and embolism. With the increase of risk factors such as old age, high blood pressure, diabetes, the incidence of atrial fibrillation is becoming increasingly alarming.
In this context, the technique of ablation of atrial fibrillation by cryotherapy balloon emerged as a breakthrough solution. Instead of using traditional heat, this method uses cold heat energy to isolate the pulmonary veins - the main starting point of atrial fibrillation.
The outstanding advantages of Cryo-balloon not only lie in its higher efficiency and safety, but also help shorten the procedure time by up to 50%, minimize radiation time and bring more comfort to the patient.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, Director of the National Heart Institute, shared that this is a modern advanced technique in the field of arrhythmia treatment, with great advantages in ensuring effectiveness and safety while shortening the procedure time, reducing radiation time and minimizing pain during the procedure.
Bach Mai Hospital's mastery of Cryo-balloon technology does not stop at the success of each case. In fact, the first 15 cases successfully performed by Bach Mai Hospital have laid a solid foundation, which is the basis for the Ministry of Health to issue a technical process for official application in Vietnam.
From now on, atrial fibrillation patients no longer have to go abroad for expensive treatment, but can completely trust in the quality of medical care right at home, with reasonable costs and optimal efficiency.
With modern equipment, a team of leading experts and technical processes approved by the Ministry of Health, the National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital will routinely deploy this cutting-edge technique.
In particular, Bach Mai Hospital also aims to train and transfer technology to other cardiovascular centers across the country, contributing to improving the quality of cardiovascular examination and treatment for the entire population.
