At the age of retirement, many elderly people in the province still work hard and participate in social work to continue contributing good values to life. They are shining examples for the younger generation to learn and follow.

Having worked in the Elderly Association for more than 10 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thoan (58 years old), President of the Elderly Association of Coc Leu Ward ( Lao Cai City) has always been active and creative in building association activities. In 2019, Ms. Thoan was trusted by the Ward Party Committee and appointed to join the Executive Committee of the Elderly Association of the Ward and hold the position of President of the Association. In order to enhance the role of the Elderly Association of the Ward, she and the Executive Committee have consolidated the branches, association groups, organized member activities, helped members and the elderly grasp the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws and the tasks of the Elderly Association. Up to now, 25/25 branches of the Elderly Association in Coc Leu Ward have maintained a good living routine, attracting 69.5% of the elderly in the area to participate in activities. The movement of the Elderly Association of Coc Leu ward always focuses on the grassroots level, especially the movement "Old age - bright example" in recent years has always been leading in Lao Cai city.

Ms. Thoan actively participates in many volunteer activities in the province.

The Chairwoman of the Coc Leu Ward Elderly Association is also an active participant in charity activities. Her personal gifts to the poor are always practical and meaningful, such as banh chung on Tet holiday, giving warm blankets to lonely elderly people, and supporting rice, sugar, and milk for elderly people in difficult circumstances.

For a long time, the image of Mr. Tran Nhu Chi (66 years old) with a small, agile figure and enthusiasm for the work of the collective has become familiar to the people of residential group No. 6, Bat Xat town, Bat Xat district. Originally a retired officer of Bat Xat Forestry, Mr. Chi has now been Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell and Head of the Association of the Elderly for more than 10 years.

Enthusiastic and passionate, Mr. Chi is always close to the people, grasping difficulties and obstacles to find solutions and remove them together with the Party cell and town leaders. The closeness and sincerity of the residential group cadres are highly appreciated by the people, so the movements implemented in the area are all favorable. From 2022 to now, in the residential group, there are 6 households related to the site clearance point for the construction of the 220 kV line. With this project, Mr. Chi and the residential group cadres have participated in doing a good job of mass mobilization so that the people agree on the site clearance compensation plan. When asked about the secret to success, Mr. Chi shared: “You have to have a firm grasp of the Land Law and site clearance compensation policies to propagate and mobilize. The important thing is to be persistent. In some cases, we had to go to their houses to talk and persuade them dozens of times before they were successful.”

Another typical example of an elderly person is Mr. Tran Van Cuong in Na Noi village, Ban Sen commune, Muong Khuong district. Mr. Cuong has been involved in social work for more than 20 years. Initially, he was a police officer, then the village Party Secretary, but no matter what position he held, he was trusted and loved by the people. Over the years, Mr. Cuong has constantly cultivated and trained the qualities of a Party member, exemplary in implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and regulations, and local regulations. At work, he always plays the role of a leader, exemplary in words and deeds, no matter how difficult it is, he still goes first and does things first for everyone to follow.

Mr. Cuong confided: “I always listen to opinions, grasp the thoughts and aspirations of the people to reflect to my superiors. I also try to participate in promptly resolving conflicts and problems right at the grassroots level. If I want people to believe and follow, I myself must be exemplary, responsible, take the lead in everything, and put the interests of the people first.”

Currently, Na Noi village has more than 130 households, mainly living on agricultural production, only a part of the labor force works as workers in companies and factories. In previous years, Na Noi was one of the villages with many difficulties in the commune with the poverty rate accounting for 70%. Implementing the movement to build new rural areas, with his functions and tasks, Mr. Cuong always pays attention to grasping the actual situation of the village, choosing appropriate contents to organize and implement. Every year, he and 21 party members in the Party cell propose programs and plans to implement and annual work activities associated with building new rural areas. Thanks to that, Na Noi has gradually changed, the economy has developed, and the material and spiritual life of the people has improved significantly. Up to now, the poverty rate of the village is only 28%, the average income is 32 million VND/person/year, making Na Noi a well-off village, leading the emulation movements in the commune.

Mr. Chi, Mrs. Thoan, and Mr. Cuong are three of many outstanding elderly people in the province. Each person has a different way of doing things, but with their responsibilities, they all try to complete their tasks well, becoming the trust and solid support of the people at the grassroots level.

Over the years, the province has always valued the experience and intelligence of the elderly, thereby encouraging and motivating the elderly to contribute their opinions and experiences in all fields and social life.

Ms. Ha Thi Thiep, Head of the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board.

Of these, 3,168 elderly members participate in Party committees, government, front organizations, grassroots political and social organizations, and more than 1,500 are members of the executive committees of local charity and education promotion associations.
