An unbelievable incident happened in India when a famous five-star hotel in Delhi charged a man for staying in their room for a total of 603 nights without paying a single penny!
The Guardian (UK) reported on June 22 that local police are investigating the incident that occurred at Roseate House - a prestigious five-star hotel located near Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The guest who “free-stayed” at the 5-star Roseate House hotel is named Ankush Dutta. He booked a room at the Roseate House on May 30, 2019 and was supposed to leave the next day. However, Ankush Dutta extended his stay at the 5-star hotel to 603 nights, until January 22, 2021, and along with that, he incurred $70,000 in unpaid room charges.
A representative of the company that operates the Roseate House hotel recently reported the incident to the police. The Roseate House hotel has accused one of its employees of fraud. The Roseate House claims that the front office manager, Prem Prakash, allowed Dutta to stay for an extended period of time, in violation of hotel policy. Prakash had access to the hotel's computer system to track the charges of all guests.
According to the hotel management, Prakash may have received some cash from Dutta to enable him to overstay. It is possible that Prakash manipulated the internal software system to cover up Dutta's extended stay.
According to Roseate House hotel policy, if a guest’s outstanding charges are pending for more than 72 hours, the CEO and the Financial Controller must be informed for instructions. However, Prakash did not inform Dutta about the case.
