After wrapping up her Paris leg of the Eras Tour , Taylor Swift moved to Lisbon on May 24. However, the first show in Portugal did not get off to a smooth start as fans waited an hour longer than expected in the hot weather to get into the Estádio da Luz stadium.
Ahead of the concert, footage showed long lines of fans lining up outside the venue. The gates were scheduled to open to ticket holders at 4 p.m., but fans were reportedly not allowed inside until 4:45 p.m.
Fans lined up in the hot sun to get into the venue for Taylor Swift's show.
This delay made people who had been queuing for a long time become frustrated and shouted at the security staff: “Let us in”.
The situation then became even more difficult to control when 200 spectators broke through the fence, passed through the security gate and entered the stadium, terrifying the security team.
“There was a lot of pushing and shoving. They broke down the fence. There were only two security guards outside so security had to be deployed to deal with the rioting fans. They started shouting, ‘Let us in, let us in’. The fans were hysterical because of the delay. People were pushing and screaming. The staff were quite nervous and scared about it. I don’t know what caused the delay but we had to wait for the VIPs to get in, while the other fans were forced to wait,” the security guard said.
The hot weather is believed to be the reason why fans are more prone to outbursts of anger than usual. Security had a strict rule that no water was allowed into the stadium. However, due to the long waits in the heat, the organizers made a last-minute change to allow drinking water into the covered stadium.
“I just feel sad. I spent thousands of dollars to see Taylor. Please, I just want to be inside,” one person said.
Meanwhile, a spectator from Amsterdam (Netherlands) said he and three friends waited in line for an hour and a half, but were kicked out when they approached the stadium gate.
“We were like cattle being herded. Total chaos,” a female fan likened.

USA Today Entertainment reported that when Taylor appeared on stage, she did not apologize for the delay and keeping fans waiting. Taylor's crew also did not respond to emails when asked about the reason for the late start.
Instead, the 35-year-old singer thanked her fans for their love: “This is my first time in Portugal and this is how you welcomed us. When I walked out, looked out and saw the crowd, you took my breath away. My heart was beating so fast. You made me feel loved. Thank you so much.”
Taylor is scheduled to perform one more night in Lisbon before heading to Madrid, Spain, and opening the show at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 29.
