Widespread flooding in Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces continues after rain and floods have decreased.
Discussing the unusual features of the ongoing flood in the South Central region, Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that this is a very heavy rain that has lasted for many days in the South Central region (from November 17), right after consecutive heavy rains in October and early November.
With cold air combined with East wind, there have been periods of very extreme rain in short periods of time in localities from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa .
For example, Son Thanh Tay and Son Thanh Dong, Hoa My Tay, Son Long, Son Dinh, Song Hinh (communes of old Phu Yen , now Dak Lak) all recorded rain from 1,000-1,200 mm.
"Due to the impact of heavy rain, right after the previous floods, hydroelectric reservoirs operated to release water combined with the high water level on rivers in the area, so during this flood, many rivers exceeded historical levels," said Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam.
Regarding the development of floods in the coming time, Mr. Lam said that from now until the night of November 21, rain is forecast to concentrate in the east of Dak Lak and the north of Khanh Hoa with common rainfall of 100-200 mm, in some places over 350 mm.
This makes the risk of flash floods and landslides in coastal areas and the South Central Highlands remain very high.
Floods are gradually receding on most rivers in the South Central region, except for Dinh Ninh Hoa River, Cai Phan Rang River (Khanh Hoa), and Krong Ana River (Dak Lak) which are rising.
It is forecasted that after November 21, the rain will gradually decrease and floods on rivers will decrease faster. However, widespread flooding in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa provinces will continue after the rain and floods decrease.
