To help young filmmakers have the opportunity to listen to opinions, access and talk more with professionals, the CineTalk series under the framework of the Vietnam short film competition - Vietnames 2025 has been produced.

In the first episode that just aired, director Nguyen Quang Dung, producer - Production Supervisor of K+ television Hoang Thanh Huyen, founder - Chairman of Beta Group Bui Quang Minh (Minh Beta) and young director Dinh Hoang Long - the person behind the work Ngu Cung Am, which won the Most Creative Short Film award of Vietnames 2024 - discussed the topic: "Do it, don't be afraid".

What elements make a good movie?

According to director Nguyen Quang Dung, what he wants to see most in filmmaking competitions is how the young generation can express the breath of the times in their works. He said that although everything needs to be learned, when starting to create, consider it as just a foundation for reference and most importantly, find your own personality.

Taking the film Ngu Cung Am as an example, he said the work impressed the audience with its storytelling, making them curious and skeptical, combined with the harmonious combination of cultural elements such as Cai Luong.

Director Dinh Hoang Long also said that initially the film's plot was built in a linear direction, but because he wanted to explore new ways, he and his crew decided to change and reverse the order of the timeline.

Founder and Chairman of Beta Group Bui Quang Minh also agreed with director Nguyen Quang Dung's opinion, and praised this short film, although made with a limited budget, it was still meticulous and created a lot of emotions.

Producer Hoang Thanh Huyen also believes that a good film (whether a debut or a commercial film) must have emotions and must be able to convey them completely to the audience. A work is only successful when the audience can connect with the story that the filmmaker wants to convey, with the theme that we want to portray.

Go for it, don't be afraid!

From the perspective of an investor and entrepreneur, "shark" Minh said that for himself, filmmaking and starting a business have many similarities. Because when starting a business, we are also pursuing an idea that we are truly passionate about.

Once passionate, no matter how difficult or unsuccessful the first steps are, we will still bravely overcome them. He compared: "It's like a cocoon, you have to make an effort to grow out, from there become a healthy butterfly. Filmmaking is the same."

Therefore, the advice he gives to young filmmakers is to believe and pursue with a lot of passion, enthusiasm and effort for their dreams, for their projects, for their ideas. And to make it happen, learning anytime, anywhere, observing, meeting people is also very necessary. Because later on, it is the efforts that will give us valuable baggage, from which we can use when the opportunity comes.

Young director Dinh Hoang Long also shared: "Just be bold and confident and do it! Only by making mistakes and correcting them can you grow. How long will you hesitate?"

Successful very early - from the age of 24, director Nguyen Quang Dung confided: "Experience will come sooner or later, but youth cannot be regained. Therefore, the most sincere advice is that if you love it, if you are passionate, just follow your own perspective and don't be afraid of anything."

And on that journey, the most important thing is to learn and solve the problem yourself before asking for help from others. That may be right, it may be wrong, but at least "when you think for yourself, you will gradually encounter things that no one has done, and when no one has answered, you will find it. Sometimes self-study is also a way to prove your passion".

Producer Hoang Thanh Huyen concluded: "Always believe in your passion, strive to reach your dreams and always remember that we make films because we want to live many lives and have many experiences."
