On the evening of April 24 local time, South African telecommunications group MTN announced that it had encountered a "cybersecurity incident" that resulted in "unauthorized access to the personal information of some MTN customers in some markets."

It is Africa's largest mobile network operator, providing services in 18 regional markets.

In the announcement, MTN said “an unknown third party” claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of MTN’s systems.

At this stage, MTN has no information to suggest that customer accounts and e-wallets have been directly compromised. Additionally, there is no indication that MTN’s critical infrastructure has been compromised.

MTN’s core platforms or services were also not compromised. South Africa’s top five telecoms network stressed that its “core network, payments systems and financial services infrastructure” remained secure and fully operational.

MTN stressed that it has activated its cyber security response procedures, notified the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks of the incident, and has notified the relevant national authorities and will continue to provide updates while working closely with law enforcement agencies to assist with investigations.

MTN did not disclose which markets were affected, although observers said the involvement of South African police suggested this was one of the markets affected.

The company also recommends that customers stay vigilant and take regular security measures, be cautious of unusual messages and not click on suspicious links.

MTN was launched in 1994 and is now one of the five largest telecommunications networks in South Africa, including Vodacom, Telkom, MTN, Cell C and Saicom. In recent months, Cell C has also suffered a ransomware attack./.
