Vietnamese mathematician solves two century-old problems

Recently, many Vietnamese mathematicians expressed their joy when sharing information about Professor Pham Huu Tiep, who solved two fundamental problems that have puzzled mathematicians for decades.

Double Breakthrough

Phys.org, a British science news site, published an article by Ms. Kitta MacPherson, a public relations specialist at Rutgers University, USA, with the title: In a double breakthrough, a mathematician helps solve two long-standing problems . The article tells about the outstanding achievement that Professor Pham Huu Tiep of Rutgers University - New Brunswick (USA) has just achieved, which is to complete the proof of the "Height Zero" hypothesis since 1955 and solve a theoretical problem of Deligne-Lusztig.

The article opens with an introduction about a professor at Rutgers University-New Brunswick who has spent his career exploring the mysteries of mathematics, and who, together with his colleagues, solved two fundamental problems that had puzzled mathematicians for decades. The professor’s name is Nguyen Huu Tiep.

The first problem is to prove the "Height Zero" hypothesis proposed by the eminent German-American mathematician Richard Brauer in 1955. For nearly 7 decades, mathematicians have tested countless cases and found it to be correct. But no one has proven this hypothesis correct, until Professor Pham Huu Tiep and his colleagues proved it and published it in the Annals of Mathematics journal. The mathematicians consider the achievement of Professor Pham Huu Tiep and his co-authors to be significant in untying an extremely important knot in group theory that has existed for nearly 70 years.

Author Kitta MacPherson also said that Professor Pham Huu Tiep has been pursuing the project of proving "Height 0" for 11 years now.

The second problem that Professor Pham Huu Tiep and his colleagues solved was a difficult problem in Deligne-Lusztig theory, part of the fundamental machinery of representation theory. This work is also considered a "breakthrough" related to the trace of a matrix (an important concept of linear algebra). The work is presented in detail in two articles, one published in the journal Inventiones Mathematicae , one published in Annals of Mathematics (both are the world's leading prestigious journals in the field of mathematics).

Pride of Rutgers University, USA

According to author Kitta MacPherson, the leadership of the Department of Mathematics at Rutgers University is very proud of the two achievements of Professor Pham Huu Tiep and his co-authors, because they have helped Rutgers University maintain its position as the world's leading center in the field of group theory. Professor Stephen Miller, Head of the Department of Mathematics at Rutgers University, said: "Through his incredibly extensive career, Tiep has brought an international perspective to our department."

Professor Pham Huu Tiep, 61 years old, is from Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An, but grew up in Hanoi and is a former student of Chu Van An High School, Hanoi. He was a member of the Vietnamese team that participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad IMO in England in 1979 (competing in the same year as mathematician Le Ba Khanh Trinh) and won a silver medal.

He then studied at university and did research at Lomonosov State University (Soviet Union), then went to the US in 1996 and worked at many US universities. From 2018 to present, he is a professor at Rutgers University, collaborating with the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) Berkeley, the Institute for Advanced Study Princeton.

At the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Pham Huu Tiep was invited to present at the Algebra subcommittee. Notably, very few Vietnamese mathematicians were invited to be sectional speakers at the ICM.

In addition to Professor Pham Huu Tiep, Vietnamese mathematicians invited to read reports at ICM include: Professor Frédéric Pham (ICM 1970), Professor Duong Hong Phong (ICM 1994), Professor Ngo Bao Chau (ICM 2006, invited to read the plenary session in 2010), Professor Vu Ha Van (ICM 2014), Professor Dinh Tien Cuong (ICM 2018).
