Early consultation for grade 10 students to choose classes
According to the 2018 General Education Program, new students entering grade 10 will register to choose a block combination with elective subjects and study topics. Choosing the right subjects that match their abilities will help them easily orient their future careers.
After completing enrollment for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year, Nguyen Canh Chan High School (Dai Dong Commune, Nghe An ) quickly gathered students to enroll and organized counseling and guidance on registering for elective subject combinations for them.

This year, the school enrolls 8 grade 10 students with nearly 400 students. At the consultation session, besides students, there were also many parents. The representative of the school's Board of Directors introduced the group of elective subjects and oriented students to choose the appropriate subjects.
This year, Nguyen Canh Chan High School has built classes oriented towards natural sciences, social sciences (advanced CD block) and social sciences (basic). For students registering for the natural sciences group, in addition to the compulsory subjects, they will study Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Informatics. As for the 2 social sciences groups, they will study additional elective subjects and specialized topics including Physics, Geography, Economics and Law and Informatics.

According to Mr. Le Hai Nam - Vice Principal of Nguyen Canh Chan High School, when placing classes and advising students, we will base on the results of the 10th grade entrance exam, student capacity, teaching staff structure and future career orientation. In which, the teaching staff and school facilities are "fixed", while students and the school program will have new elements every year.

Through the 2025 high school graduation exam and currently many universities have announced their admission plans, showing that the admission combination has changed compared to before. In particular, some universities have gradually stopped considering group C00 for many majors. This is also a point that the school advises new students entering grade 10.
“The school also does not divide classes into too many groups, making it difficult for students and parents to choose. With the current subject combinations, the school has calculated so that students can study and participate in many exams at the same time, including competency assessment exams,” said Mr. Le Hai Nam.
Consulting suitable for students and parents
After receiving advice, Nguyen Mai Trang (Hoa Quan commune, Nghe An) quickly filled out the information and submitted the registration form to the school. In the recent 10th grade entrance exam, she scored 19.75 points - among the top students in the school. With her outstanding ability in social subjects, she easily chose the advanced class in block C and said that she plans to take the exam to study pedagogy in the future. However, the number of students with a clear career orientation like Mai Trang is not much.

The general entrance level of grade 10 at Nguyen Canh Chan High School is not low but not high compared to neighboring schools. Especially, the quality of the key points is difficult because the school is located in the same area, next to Thanh Chuong 1 High School - this school attracts most of the top students in the old Thanh Chuong district.
Most of the school’s students are from purely agricultural areas, many of whom are ethnic minorities living in resettlement areas. Vi Tuan Hung, a Thai ethnic in Son Lam commune, Nghe An, said he scored 14.25 points and registered his first choice for an advanced class in groups C-D. However, the school only accepted one advanced class, and his score was quite low, so he registered his second choice for a basic class.

During the consultation session, many parents came to the school to enroll their children, but did not understand the new program. Mr. Kha Van Minh, who lives in Ma village, Son Lam commune, said: "My child only got 12.5 points in the 10th grade exam. His academic performance is still very weak, but luckily he was admitted to a public school. The teachers advised him to enroll in a social class to suit his abilities. The family only hopes that he will study averagely, and then pass the graduation exam to go to work."
Teacher Nguyen Van Quyen - Head of the Foreign Language Department. Participating in the consulting team, he has met and directly discussed with many parents to ask for support in guiding their children to choose the right subjects and careers. In any case, he patiently explains and shares so that parents and students can understand and relieve their concerns and worries.

Mr. Quyen shared that although the 2018 General Education Program has been implemented at the high school level for 3 years, parents in rural, mountainous and ethnic minority areas are still very vague about their children's study programs. Very few people are knowledgeable about guiding their children's subjects and careers.
Another difficulty is that many of the school’s students have parents who work far away and live with their grandparents. During this time, many students, after taking the 10th grade entrance exam, leave their hometowns to visit their parents in industrial zones in the city. The grandparents who go to school on their behalf are confused when registering their children’s class combinations. This is also a barrier to the school’s counseling and orientation work when they cannot communicate directly with the students.

“Personally, before consulting, I have to carefully research the university entrance exam combinations of schools and career trends in the next 5-6 years. I find out what subjects students like to study, what they like to do in the future, and listen to them to provide appropriate support,” Mr. Quyen added.
The representative of the Board of Directors of Nguyen Canh Chan High School also said that when students are properly advised, they will have an advantage in their studies as well as their further training orientation after graduating from high school. This will avoid the situation where students ask to change classes or blocks, causing difficulties in teaching and learning for the school as well as disadvantages for students in reviewing for high school graduation exams and applying for university and college admissions later.
With the characteristics of high school as a careereducation stage, students in addition to compulsory subjects will register for elective subjects and study topics. Therefore, most high schools in Nghe An province organize counseling, orientation, and selection of subject combinations for 10th grade students. This helps students avoid confusion and difficulties when choosing subjects. At the same time, it helps them understand career trends and make accurate subject choices, suitable for their abilities, interests and close to the future labor market.
