Ho Chi Minh City delegation has absolute advantage
The National Roller Sports Championship (NVS) has concluded after 3 days of competition in Hanoi. With the gold medal at the National Championship and 15 gold medals at the national age group competitions, the Ho Chi Minh City delegation absolutely dominated this young sport , continuing to affirm its leading position in new sports movements in Vietnam.
Second place belongs to Bac Giang delegation with 3 national championship gold medals and 2 national age group gold medals. Tien Giang delegation also won 3 national championship gold medals and 2 national age group gold medals but finished third overall, losing the number of silver medals to Bac Giang delegation. Young Champions
The National Roller Sports Championship and Age Group Championship took place from August 16 to 18 at the Hanoi National Sports Complex, with the participation of 200 athletes from 10 provinces and cities including: Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Quy Nhon, Binh Phuoc , Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Tien Giang and Ho Chi Minh City.
Athletes competed in 15 events of the National Championship and 24 events of the National Age Group Championship, in the categories: speed racing, art performance (slalom, slide). In this year's tournament, young athlete Huynh Thi Cam Ly competed excellently, winning 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal, notably winning the women's speed slalom championship over 15 years old.
Cam Ly is a promising face of Roller Sports Vietnam. At the 2024 Ninghe China International Roller Skating Open held in Tianjin, Cam Ly won 2 gold medals in the 200m and 500m Speed Skating events. Along with Cam Ly, potential athletes at the national championship will be considered for selection for intensive training to compete in domestic and international tournaments, becoming potential factors for Roller Sports in the future.
The sport to look forward to
Roller Sports (the general name for roller skating sports including speed skating, performance skating and ice skating) appeared in Vietnam since the early 1990s and became a part of street sports life.
However, it was not until about the last 5 years that Roller Sports really developed strongly, gradually becoming more professional to aim for further goals.
The advantage of Roller Sports is that it does not require much physical strength and is suitable for the skillful and persistent qualities of Vietnamese people. Roller Sports has been included in the competition program at ASIAD and Olympics, showing the recognition of international experts for this young sport at the professional level.
National Roller Sports Championship attracts many young athletes to participate
Vietnamese sports can set a goal to develop Roller Sports, but must ensure two aspects: a comprehensive and synchronous development strategy, and at the same time promote the Roller Sports movement. Without socialization and strong development among the masses, especially the youth, Roller Sports will find it difficult to transform, in the context of many developed countries in Asia also investing in street sports and entertainment.
“Roller Sports has been included in the Olympic competition program in the last two editions. The Roller Sports movement in Vietnam is also growing rapidly in 63 provinces and cities. This sport is especially close to young people, especially those who have not had much contact with other sports before. The Vietnam Skating and Roller Federation is doing well by cooperating with international organizations to train referees, and at the same time inviting foreign experts to help train coaches and athletes, to create a core team with good expertise to develop the movement.
Previously, domestic Roller Sports tournaments had difficulty attracting sponsors, and the number of participating athletes was still small. However, the tournament has now had a greater influence, attracting more athletes to participate. That is a good sign, but more efforts are still needed to promote this sport,” emphasized Dang Ha Viet, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training.
Up to now, there are more than 100 Roller Clubs nationwide (each club has from 20 to hundreds of athletes regularly participating in training and competing in tournaments from grassroots to national). In addition to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Roller has spread to many provinces and cities across the country such as: Vung Tau, Tien Giang, Bac Giang, Binh Phuoc, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Binh Dinh, Binh Duong, Quang Binh, Quang Ninh, Nghe An, Can Tho, Da Nang...
"When it is included as an official competition at the congress, we strive to have about 15 localities participating," Ms. Trinh Thi Trang, General Secretary of the Vietnam Skating and Roller Federation affirmed.
