In Group C, both Japan and Spain have already secured their place in the next round. Therefore, the match between the two teams will only determine the group leader before entering the round of 16.
Entering the match, despite being underestimated, the Japanese women's team created a spectacular performance at Wellington Regional Stadium and dominated the match before taking a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to a brace from Hinata Miyazawa and a goal from Riko Ueki.
In the 12th minute of the match, Japan opened the scoring. From a quick counter-attack, Hinata Miyazawa escaped to receive a delicate pass from Jun Endo and then coolly defeated the Spanish goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
The Japanese women's team defended very tightly, while Spain dominated possession but were completely unable to create any truly dangerous opportunities.
Playing better than their opponents, the Japanese women doubled the gap in the 29th minute. Riko Ueki accelerated and fired a shot, the ball hit the Spanish player's foot before bouncing into the net, the score was now 2-0 for the Asian representative.
Continuing their winning streak, Japan tore Spain's net again in the 40th minute. Hinata entered the penalty area after a quick transition from defense to attack, then fired a tricky shot that gave the opposing goalkeeper no chance to block.
Entering the second half, Spain reacted weakly and did not have many notable situations to score a goal to reduce the score. Meanwhile, with a safe gap, Japan still played proactively, creating a very dangerous defensive counter-attacking game. Mina Tanaka scored the 4th goal for Japan with a beautiful diagonal shot in the 83rd minute. All of Spain's efforts in the final minutes did not bring any goals.
In the end, the match ended with a score of 4-0 in favor of Japan. This is a big shock of the 2023 Women's World Cup up to now because no one thought Spain could lose so easily.
