Water in rivers and canals in Ben Tre City and My Tho has been contaminated with salinity from 2.2 to nearly 5 parts per thousand, affecting the lives of many households.
On the afternoon of March 5, Mr. Dang Hoang Lam, Director of the Ben Tre Province Hydrometeorological Station, said that the salinity level on the Ben Tre and Ham Luong rivers is currently at nearly 5 parts per thousand. In the next 2-7 days, the salinity level will gradually increase. At My Hoa station (Ward 7, Ben Tre City), 48 km from the river mouth, the salinity level may be at its highest level of about 10 parts per thousand, affecting more than 50,000 households in the area.
Due to the salinity of the water sources in the rivers and canals, Ben Tre Water Supply and Drainage Joint Stock Company takes raw water from the upper Tien River, then pumps it to treatment plants, and supplies it to households in Ben Tre City. The water supply unit also plans to use barges to transport raw water that has not been salinized from other places for treatment.

In Tien Giang, the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue also said that the salinity level on the Tien River system in My Tho City reached 2.2 to 3.2 parts per thousand, higher than the same period last year, affecting more than 51,000 households. Currently, the water treatment plant in My Tho City has temporarily stopped operating. The water supply unit must use clean water from factories upstream of the Tien River to supply people.
This year's dry season, salinity is forecast to penetrate deeper and last longer than the average of many years. Previously, salinity penetrated the river system in Ben Tre, affecting the lives of tens of thousands of households. In Tien Giang, the sluice on Nguyen Tan Thanh canal (Chau Thanh) - the second largest in the West, after Cai Lon - Cai Be sluice, had to be closed a week earlier to prevent salinity and store fresh water.
