Many places to eat but not enough places to play

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế27/06/2023

Customers increase, but revenue increases little

Many times when I went to Canh Duong beach (Phu Loc district), I saw many groups of tourists here, including tourists from other provinces. They swam in the sea, ate and then left. Among them, some went to Hue city, others to Da Nang . When asked why, many tourists said frankly: "After swimming and eating, there is nothing to do. Staying here is boring."

As someone who is attached to Canh Duong beach in the role of a security guard here, Mr. Bui Ngoc Thang also cannot help but feel regretful. He said: “In Canh Duong, there are only food stalls and grocery stores. Tourists come but do not have the opportunity to experience tourism products and services for people to develop their livelihoods.”

The story from Canh Duong beach is a common story with many concerns about the tourism problem of Phu Loc. It is quite common for tourists to choose to go to Lang Co to eat seafood, then return to Da Nang to have fun. Mr. Pham Huu Chung, Head of the Department of Culture - Information of Phu Loc district, acknowledged that compared to other localities in the province, Phu Loc is endowed by nature with many potentials and strengths in tourism and economy such as sea, lagoon, mountains and forests, natural landscapes.

Phu Loc is an internationally branded destination associated with Lang Co Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Bach Ma National Park is located in the remaining primeval forest ecosystem of the majestic Truong Son range, a biodiversity conservation area with many rare genetic resources and animals, exploited for research and exploration tourism. In addition, there are other famous tourist destinations such as Truc Lam Bach Ma Zen Monastery, famous beaches such as Ham Rong, Canh Duong, Binh An, Bai Chuoi and Son Cha island. In addition, Chan May deep-water port is qualified to receive cargo ships of over 50,000 tons and cruise ships with a capacity of over 5,000 people, creating favorable conditions for the strong development of tourism services. Favored by nature, however, according to Mr. Chung, it is worrisome that Phu Loc district's tourism has not yet developed commensurate with its potential and advantages.

In the first 6 months of the year, the estimated number of tourists visiting Phu Loc district reached about 1,026,188/1,790,000 visitors (reaching 57.3% compared to the resolution and plan for 2023); an increase of 58.2% over the same period in 2022. Of which, international visitors are estimated at 205,238 visitors; domestic visitors are estimated at 820,950 visitors. According to Mr. Chung, the number of tourists to Phu Loc has increased, but tourism revenue has increased little.

In fact, Phu Loc still lacks proper entertainment venues such as outdoor entertainment areas, bar services, spas, etc. The existing entertainment venues are still fragmented and small, not meeting the needs of customers. “People often jokingly but truly say that Phu Loc has many places to eat, but lacks places to play. When they come to Phu Loc, it is easy to experience specialties and cuisine in many places, but there is still a lack of entertainment venues, especially night entertainment to keep customers staying. Only when many customers stay in Phu Loc, will they “spend money”, thereby creating a source of revenue to develop the local economy and develop people's livelihoods,” Mr. Chung worried.

Flexible solutions

Phu Loc district has the advantage of having a variety of tourism products and types from sea and lagoon tourism; eco-tourism; spiritual, cultural, historical - revolutionary tourism; culinary tourism. The total number of visitors staying in Phu Loc in the first 6 months of 2023 is estimated at 244,232. This number will certainly increase if Phu Loc creates entertainment spots.

Undeniably, this locality is also facing difficulties. According to Mr. Le Cong Minh, Chairman of Loc Vinh Commune People's Committee, the problem of being "stuck" with the Chan May - Lang Co economic zone planning makes tourism investment in the locality very difficult, especially in building entertainment areas. In addition, legal difficulties and fragmented investment, lacking large enterprises are also obstacles.

According to tourism experts, tourism infrastructure is not yet synchronized, tourism products are not yet diverse and rich; connectivity in tourism product development is still limited, tourism promotion and advertising work is not regular, focused, and key... which has significantly affected the comparative advantage and competitiveness of the district with localities inside and outside the province. It is not easy to attract more investors to invest in services in the area.

It is difficult, but for the sake of development, we must find solutions to avoid losing our advantages. Recently, on May 19, the People's Committee of Phu Loc district organized a conference to promote tourism in 2023. Many opinions from experts and businesses said that in order to attract tourism investment in Phu Loc, information about destinations, investment conditions, and local incentive policies need to be clearer, helping investors choose suitable types of services.

To attract investment, flexible solutions are needed. One of the important issues requiring the role of local authorities is to make efforts to improve and build an attractive and open investment and business environment; always listen, discuss, and promptly resolve difficulties and obstacles of businesses, organizations, and individuals.

In addition, it is necessary to implement mechanisms and policies to support businesses, especially site clearance for key projects. Focus on investing in completing tourism connection infrastructure, quickly implementing regional connectivity transport infrastructure projects...
