According to information from the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, during the night and morning of October 7, Noi Bai Airport experienced heavy and prolonged thunderstorms, visibility dropped to less than 1km, wind gusts reached level 7, and wind shear appeared on the runway. The complex weather affected flight operations.
The Air Traffic Management Center (Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation) coordinates with relevant agencies to regulate air traffic to and from Noi Bai airport.
Accordingly, during adverse weather conditions, Noi Bai airport only receives 10-13 flights/hour, instead of maintaining the capacity to operate 40 flights/hour in normal weather conditions.
In particular, from 8am to 11am on October 7, Noi Bai airport's aircraft receiving capacity must be reduced to 5 flights/hour.
A total of 17 flights to Noi Bai airport had to wait in the sky until the weather cleared before landing, and one flight had to divert to an alternate airport instead of landing at Noi Bai.
As soon as weather conditions improved, air traffic control cleared flights to land safely one after another, with no more grounded flights.
Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation said it is continuing to direct its affiliated units to strengthen weather monitoring and continuously update meteorological forecasts to proactively deploy timely response measures.
Most recently, on September 30, heavy rain and bad weather due to the impact of storm Bualoi (storm No. 10) caused 53 flights to Noi Bai airport to wait to land, and 37 flights had to divert to land at alternate airports.
The fact that many flights have to wait and divert to other airports instead of landing at Noi Bai airport has caused a chain reaction affecting the operations of airlines.
