According to the report, Apple blocked approximately $7 billion in suspected fraudulent transactions between 2020 and 2023, with over $1.8 billion of that amount occurring in 2023 alone. Apple also blocked over 14 million stolen credit cards and prevented over 3.3 million accounts from making transactions during this period.
Specifically, Apple rejected over 1.7 million developer app submissions for failing to meet privacy and content security standards. The company also terminated nearly 374 million developer and customer accounts, and removed almost 152 million invalid reviews and comments. Furthermore, Apple rejected over 91,000 developer applications.
App moderation helps remove many fraudulent and deceptive apps from the App Store.
The App Store's review team meticulously evaluates each submitted app, with an average of approximately 132,500 apps reviewed each week. The review process includes both automated and manual methods to detect and prevent fraud and harmful applications.
A prime example of fraudulent apps is those that initially appear "harmless," such as photo editing or gaming apps. However, after an update, they transform into apps for streaming pirated movies, gambling, or predatory lending. In some cases, Apple's review team has identified and removed numerous financial apps designed to scam users.
This report is published annually by Apple. However, this year it may offer a more positive outlook on Apple's App Store, especially in light of the new regulations the company is facing from Europe. The bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which took effect in February, forces Apple to allow third-party app stores and sideloading. At the same time, Apple must also allow developers to use third-party payment technologies if they wish, instead of being forced to go through Apple.
Apple argues that mandatory opening under DMA could weaken the security of the iOS ecosystem, but the stringent measures and achievements in preventing fraud show that the company is making efforts to protect users from online threats.
