Perilla is a spicy, warm herb that often grows in rural areas of Vietnam. According to traditional medicine, perilla leaves have the effect of relieving colds, reducing inflammation, stabilizing pregnancy and reducing stomach pain.
Meanwhile, ginger, another popular medicinal herb, is also warming, antibacterial, aids digestion and treats coughs. When cooked together, these two ingredients create a folk remedy that helps reduce fever, reduce cough, reduce phlegm and aid digestion.
Some common uses are to boil water to drink when having a cold, cook porridge to relieve colds with perilla, ginger, green onions, or pound perilla leaves to get water mixed with salt to reduce stomach pain and bloating. In addition, many people also use perilla water to support weight loss, thanks to its ability to promote metabolism and reduce fat accumulation.
However, according to physician Bui Dac Sang ( Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association), although it is a benign remedy, users still need to be careful, especially in the following cases:
People with allergies
Although rare, both perilla and ginger can cause allergic reactions in some sensitive people. Symptoms may include hives, itching, swelling of the lips, or difficulty breathing. Perilla, in particular, contains strong essential oils that can cause irritation if used in high doses or for a long time.
If there is a history of allergies to any essential oils or herbs, users should test a small amount before regular use.
Pregnant women
In folk medicine, perilla has been used to stabilize pregnancy and treat flu during pregnancy. However, some traditional medicine experts advise pregnant women not to overuse it, because the warm properties and active ingredients in perilla leaves can affect blood pressure or stimulate the uterus.
Pregnant women should only use perilla water and ginger as prescribed by a doctor or qualified physician. Do not use it for a long time or as a substitute for the main treatment medication.
People taking medication to treat underlying diseases
Perilla may interact with certain medications used to treat blood pressure, diabetes, or blood thinners. Ginger also has mild blood-thinning properties, so when combined with Western medicine, it may increase the risk of bleeding or reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
People with chronic illnesses should consult their doctor before using herbal decoctions, including familiar ingredients such as perilla and ginger.
People with high blood pressure or heat in the body
Both perilla and ginger are warm in nature. If you have a hot constitution, or are prone to acne or heat in the body, frequent use of these can make the condition worse. For people with high blood pressure, using high doses of ginger can also cause a slight increase in blood pressure.
Should be used in moderation, do not use continuously for more than 5-7 days, especially in hot weather.
Children under 1 year old
Children's digestive systems and ability to metabolize medicinal properties are not yet fully developed, and are easily irritated by essential oils or the spicy substances in perilla and ginger. In addition, children are also very sensitive to any changes in their diet, including herbal ones.
Children under one year of age should not be given perilla leaf or ginger juice. For older children, consult a doctor before using folk remedies.
Use it properly to be effective
If you are not in the groups that need attention, healthy people can use perilla and ginger water as a health support measure, especially during the cold rainy season or when you first catch a cold. However, you need to make sure to use clean ingredients, cook thoroughly, and do not leave it overnight; do not drink on an empty stomach or when you have a high fever; only drink 150-250 ml at a time, 1-2 times a day, and do not use it for more than a week without instructions.
Perilla and ginger are "kitchen herbs" that bring many health benefits if used properly. However, not everyone is suitable for folk remedies. Before using them regularly, users, especially those in the risk group, should consult a specialist to ensure safety for themselves and their families.
