According to the Association of Indonesian Travel Agents (ASTINDO), Indonesian travelers are adjusting their spending habits by looking for better travel deals, choosing destinations more carefully, and prioritizing value over luxury. Although the economic downturn has affected the purchasing power of Indonesian consumers, outbound travel continues to grow strongly, and demand is only changing, not decreasing.
A key factor sustaining Indonesians’ appetite for overseas travel is the emergence of competitively priced destinations, fueled by increased flight availability and aggressive tourism promotion campaigns, such as in China and Vietnam.
"Many Indonesian tourists are attracted to Vietnam after seeing the country on their social media. The country is affordable, has beautiful landscapes and is perfect for short trips. This destination is seeing a surge in demand in Indonesia," a representative of TX Travel in Indonesia told TTG Asia.
For many years, the Indonesian tourism market has always been rated as the top in Southeast Asia, thanks to its fourth largest population in the world . The total number of air passengers between Vietnam and Indonesia will reach more than 800,000 in 2024, an increase of 61% compared to 2019.
Recently, a new direct flight route between Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Bali (Indonesia) was announced, bringing high expectations for growth in two-way tourist numbers and also opening up many opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
The Bali Sun website assessed that the new Ho Chi Minh City - Bali route is expected to be in high demand, as Ho Chi Minh City is the perfect stopover before tourists head to other attractive tourist destinations. International visitors can fly from Bali to Ho Chi Minh City, spend a few days exploring Vietnam's economic hub, then choose a short and affordable flight to Phu Quoc - one of the most sought-after beach resorts in the world today.
While the mid- to low-end segments are adjusting their spending, wealthy Indonesian travelers continue to prioritize exclusivity and experiences, with the top destinations for high-end Indonesian travelers being Northern Europe and Russia, according to tourism experts in Indonesia.
