For the first time in 25 years, women are returning to serve in the Colombian armed forces.

1,296 women volunteered to join the Colombian army in February, when the country officially recruited women into its military for the first time in 25 years.
Female recruits must live on military bases and receive a monthly stipend of $75. Some female recruits hope to build a career in the armed forces, which they also see as a chance for stable employment andeducation .

The Colombian military has about 200,000 soldiers. Each year, the South American country accepts about 50,000 men into its armed forces for 12 months of mandatory military service.
The Colombian military relies on recruits to protect infrastructure while professional soldiers deal with drug gangs and rebel groups.
