According to the latest data from the General Department of Customs, in September 2023, Vietnam's export turnover to the Japanese market reached 1.9 billion USD, down 10.5% compared to the previous month. In the first 9 months of the year, Vietnam's exports to Japan reached 17.2 billion USD, accounting for 6% of the country's export turnover, down 3.8% compared to the same period last year.
Japan is Vietnam's fourth largest export market (after the United States, China, and South Korea).

By the end of September, there were 5 groups of goods exported to Japan with a turnover of 1 billion USD or more. Leading the way was textiles and garments with a turnover of 2.93 billion USD, accounting for more than 17% of export turnover to Japan, up 0.6% over the same period last year.
Next is means of transport and spare parts reaching 2.1 billion USD, up 17.3%, accounting for 12.4%.
The remaining 3 groups with a turnover of "billions of dollars" but negative growth are: Machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts reached 2.02 billion USD, accounting for 11.7%, down 2.25%; wood and wood products reached 1.26 billion USD, accounting for 7.32%, down 9.5%; seafood reached 1.1 billion USD, accounting for 6.42%, down 12.9%.
In contrast, by the end of September, imports from Japan reached more than 15.7 billion USD, accounting for 6.6% of the country's total import turnover, down 12% over the same period last year.
By the end of September, Vietnam had a trade surplus of 1.5 billion USD to the Japanese market.
