Passion for words

Coming to the profession with a love of words, many poets and writers have been quietly appearing in newspapers every day for many years. They live their lives with words, writing for newspapers as a way to share, reflect, preserve memories and preserve kindness in everyday life.

Without a journalist card or a position at any editorial office, for nearly 15 years, poet Nguyen Duy Xuan (born in 1957) has continued to write articles with seriousness and precision.

Born and raised in Nam Dan district (Nghe An province), Nguyen Duy Xuan started writing poetry from a young age, passionately pursuing words with an abundance of inspiration throughout the difficult years. In 1979, he went to Dak Lak to work, and fate brought his life to the podium, with chalk and blackboard. However, words in the form of poetry and journalism were still a deep source that always flowed within him.

Although he is nearly 70 years old, poet Nguyen Duy Xuan still maintains his passion, diligently writing articles and composing poetry and literature.

Although not a professional journalist, poet Nguyen Duy Xuan possesses a sharp and profound writing style, especially in the field of political commentary and current events. He has left a deep impression not only on the newspaper pages, but also in the hearts of those who appreciate words. Poet Nguyen Duy Xuan always believes that, in addition to a sharp pen and a professional heart, a journalist must also have standards in writing, preserve the purity of the Vietnamese language, be careful, and have a high awareness of his work products. Up to now, in addition to writing poetry and literature, he has written over 1,000 journalistic works. For poet Nguyen Duy Xuan, journalism is where his pen is sharper, more alert, and also more courageous when daring to face thorny social issues.

Poet Nguyen Duy Xuan shared: “Writing for newspapers helps me live a life of literature. Not for fame, nor for royalties, but first and foremost for passion.”

Up to now, at the age of nearly 70, he still maintains the flame of passion, diligently writing articles and composing poetry and literature. Every day, he spends 2-4 hours sitting and researching and writing with quiet passion and deep professional awareness.

Many people enter literature from the lecture hall, while others come to journalism through bustling editorial offices. But Truong Nhat Vuong (born in 1970) – a writer familiar to readers nationwide – came to writing from a bumpy, eventful journey of making a living. Having traveled all over the roads as a driver, then switching to teaching driving, he brings the impacts of life into each word.

In 2011, on a bus carrying his wife and children from Dak Lak to Do Luong ( Nghe An province), when passing through Thua Thien - Hue province, the car suddenly flipped over into a field. The accident injured many people. Fortunately, his wife and children were safe, but the incident left him with big questions about professional ethics in the driving profession. From that concern, he wrote his first article "A minute fast, a lifetime slow" published in Tien Phong Newspaper on July 23, 2011.

Mr. Truong Nhat Vuong discusses books with readers.

After that article, his writing journey began. He collaborated with many newspapers, writing about the inconveniences on the road or the fates he met by chance... His articles were not elaborate, always sincere and full of experience. Those newspaper pages were later collected and refined by him into the memoirs and reports "Don't let me say the word 'if only'" (published in 2014) and the traffic memoirs "If only" (published in 2019). Not only are they notes about traffic accidents, the books are also where he shares his driving experience, situation handling skills, as well as profound thoughts on behavior, ethics and humanity in life.

In 2012, he became a member of the Dak Lak Province Literature and Arts Association, officially enrolling in the ranks of writers and poets. “Writing for newspapers helps me stay alert to the thorny cuts of life, forcing myself to be concise, precise, and not easy with the truth. Literature, on the other hand, allows me to soar, to delve deep into the human soul, to reach the end of emotions. One side is like a headlight illuminating reality, the other side is like a smoldering fire warming people’s hearts. These two worlds seem to be opposites but complement each other, allowing me to both keep myself grounded and dream a little in the sky of words...”, Truong Nhat Vuong shared.

Perhaps that is why each article he writes does not stop at information but also carries emotions, thoughts and sometimes a bit of literary metaphor. On the contrary, in his writings there is always a spirit of criticism, reflection, and strong journalistic color. Between the two fields, Truong Nhat Vuong quietly walks, not choosing either side as a support but letting both journalism and literature support, illuminate and nurture the writing journey as two sides of a passion called words.
