Efforts to overcome landslides on Provincial Road 162

For many days now, Provincial Road 162, from Tang Loong Commune to Van Ban Commune (about 32 km long), has been partially blocked due to prolonged heavy rains causing many serious landslides. Currently, relevant agencies and units are doing their best to handle the situation, but the huge amount of rock and soil and unfavorable weather conditions are making the work of clearing the route extremely difficult.

A large landslide at Km 7, Provincial Road 162, in Van Ban commune, caused traffic congestion.

Provincial Road 162 is the most convenient route connecting the communes of the old Van Ban district with the areas of the communes of Tang Loong, Vo Lao, Gia Phu… and the wards of Lao Cai , Cam Duong. However, on the route there are currently more than a dozen large and small landslides, causing traffic jams.

Notably, the largest landslide at Km 7, in Van Ban commune, is up to 200 meters long, over 100 meters high, with an estimated tens of thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil falling down, completely covering the road surface.

Large blocks of rock estimated at tens of tons make it difficult to overcome the landslide.

As soon as the rain stopped, Mr. Nguyen Van Loc, construction site commander, Minh Hung Transport Company Limited (contractor) immediately mobilized human resources and vehicles such as excavators and trucks to fix the largest landslide to clear Provincial Road 162.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loc said: The unit was on duty 24/24 hours at the scene. When the weather was not rainy, we immediately arranged vehicles and machinery to clear the landslide, even working day and night to clear the route as soon as possible.

Human resources and machinery were mobilized to fix landslides on Provincial Road 162.

However, overcoming landslides on Provincial Road 162 encountered many difficulties due to the huge volume of soil and rock that needed to be handled, interspersed with large rocks weighing up to tens of tons, causing obstacles and difficulties even for heavy excavators.

In addition, continuous rain makes the roads slippery, posing many dangers for operating machinery and trucks.

Mr. Dang Van Tien, driver of Minh Hung Transport Company Limited said: We have been here for nearly ten days to carry out the task of transporting soil and rock. However, Provincial Road 162 has a steep slope, so when the road surface is covered with soil and water, it is very slippery, posing many potential dangers while driving.

Traffic congestion on Provincial Road 162 has significantly affected people's travel and daily life.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, Cam Duong Ward said: Due to the nature of my work, I often travel through Provincial Road 162. Heavy rains and floods have caused landslides on Provincial Road 162, causing traffic congestion and potential danger. I really hope that the authorities will take measures to handle the landslides so that people can travel more safely.

It is known that in recent days, the authorities have arranged for people to be on duty continuously on Provincial Road 162, promptly diverting traffic and guiding people to move to other routes to enter and exit Van Ban commune and neighboring localities.

With the spirit of urgent work, regardless of difficulties of the relevant agencies and units, it is expected that Provincial Road 162 will be reopened on October 10, with favorable weather conditions.

However, authorities are still continuously monitoring and recommending that people be extremely vigilant when traveling on this route even after it has been cleared.

On Provincial Road 162, there are many landslides. People passing through need to pay attention to ensure safety.

Even with the naked eye, cracks and giant rocks are still lurking on the slope, ready to collapse at any time, clearly demonstrating that the threat from natural disasters has not completely ended. Provincial Road 162 will need more radical and long-term solutions to ensure absolute safety and end the congestion every rainy season.
