Farmers earn millions from harvesting sweet fruits on saline soil

Pineapple is a staple crop in some provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta (MD), concentrated in the provinces of Long An, Kien Giang, Tien Giang, Hau Giang, Ca Mau ... At this time, farmers in the West are busy harvesting the 2024 pineapple crop.

In Hoa Tien commune, Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province, pineapple farmers in the area said that the current price of pineapple fluctuates from 8,000 - 12,000 VND/fruit, the average yield is over 16 tons/ha, bringing joy to farmers thanks to a good harvest and good price.

Mr. Huynh Duc Phong (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province) said: "This year's pineapple crop was a bumper crop, with good prices, so we made a lot of profit. My wife and I are very happy. After harvesting 3 hectares of pineapple, after deducting all expenses, we made a profit of about 250 million VND."

It is known that before, Mr. Phong's family grew rice, but due to the saline and alum soil, the rice could not grow and the yield was low, so they gradually switched to growing pineapple. Thanks to this type of plant being strong and having good vitality, his family has grown pineapple for economic purposes until now.

According to this farmer, to sell pineapples at high prices, for many years now farmers in the area have been planting pineapples in different seasons, which gives them off-season fruits, resulting in high profits.

“Traders buy grade 1 pineapples at the farm for 10,000 - 12,000 VND/fruit, small pineapples for 8,000 VND/fruit. This year, the pineapple consumption market is favorable, the selling price is high, so there is a lot of profit. After harvesting 1.5 hectares of pineapples, my family has a profit of more than 100 million VND” - said Mr. Truong Van Minh (Long My district, Hau Giang province).

Mr. Pham Van Dien - Thanh Xuan Agricultural Cooperative, Hoa Tien Commune (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang) - said: "Only pineapple trees can survive in this saline land. Over the past 40 years, thanks to pineapple, people here have had the conditions to develop their economy, many households have become well-off. On average, 1 hectare yields 20 tons. The selling price is from 5,000 - 13,000 VND/fruit. After deducting costs, growers make a profit of about 150 million VND/ha".

Hau Giang currently has about 3,000 hectares of pineapple, concentrated in Vi Thanh City and Long My District. Vi Thanh City alone grows about 2,700 hectares of Queen pineapple and has successfully built the Cau Duc pineapple brand.

Pineapple is one of the key agricultural products according to the agricultural development program of Hau Giang province in the period of 2021 - 2025, the target by 2025 is the pineapple growing area of ​​3,500 hectares, the output is 45,000 tons/year.
