To supply flowers for the Tet (Lunar New Year) market, in mid-October of the lunar calendar, the family of Ms. Bui Thi Hop, in Trung Son hamlet, Xuan Truong commune, Xuan Loc district, began plowing and tilling the land to cultivate nearly 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters) of gladiolus flowers for Tet. To have beautiful flowers that bloom at the right time for Tet, besides the meticulous care taken by growers in every step from soil preparation, watering, and fertilizing, the weather plays a very important role. Ms. Bui Thi Hop shared: "This year the weather is unfavorable, so farmers have to spray more pesticides, incurring higher costs than last year. Last year, after deducting investment costs, farmers earned about 50 million VND per sao of flowers. This year, farmers hope for stable weather from now until Tet so that the flowers can grow and develop well and they expect to sell them at a high price."
Mr. Nguyen Van Phu, an agricultural officer in Xuan Truong commune, Xuan Loc district, said: "These days, flower farmers in the commune regularly inspect their fields, and the commune People's Committee has also coordinated with the Farmers' Association to regularly inspect the fields when there are any unusual signs to take appropriate action. This year, farmers are using seeds from previous years, storing them in cold storage, and using them for the next season instead of buying seeds from Da Lat; they are producing their own seeds."
To prepare for the Lunar New Year (Tet) in 2025, farmers in Xuan Truong commune, Xuan Loc district, are cultivating over 30 hectares of flowers, primarily gladiolus in various colors such as red, yellow, pink, and orange, concentrated mainly in Trung Son and Trung Tin hamlets. In addition to applying scientific and technical methods to Tet flower production, farmers here also proactively produce their own seeds, thus reducing investment costs. Growing flowers for Tet is the most anticipated season of the year for farmers, with the hope of a successful harvest.
